FASHION PART II

What's the Stitch? Camp Fashion Design teaches teens industry basics
New York Daily News

Taking part in Camp Fashion Design's sketch/design class, overseen by Hasaan Rozelle

Former fashion model Heather Cole is making summer camp a lot more chic.

She has launched Camp Fashion Design, which began its first summer session in the city on July 10. It’s a sister program of Cole’s Modeling Camp, which she started back in the late 1990s.

“There are so many avenues in the world of fashion, and that’s why we did this camp,” Cole says. “You don’t just have to be a model. You could be a designer or a photographer.”

Camp Fashion Design doesn’t come cheap. It’s $999 for what’s billed as an intensive, four-day day program designed to teach teen girls the ins and outs of the fashion biz.

With help from “Project Runway” season four modeling winner Lisa Nargi, Cole is showing her campers what being a fashion designer entails.

The campers range in age from 12 to 17 and come from all over the U.S. and the world. They tour the Garment District and get to meet representatives from top fashion schools and models who have worked in the industry. The girls learn the design process from start to finish.

Campers get sketching lessons from industry professional Hasaan Rozelle, who has worked with DKNY and Perry Ellis. After they learn how to put their ideas on paper, students are shown how to pitch their ideas, pick out fabrics and construct their pieces.

“We’ve been planning this curriculum for a while now,” Cole says, “so to see it come to fruition is a lot of fun.”

It’s hardly Cole’s first summer camp program. Her website claims that 4,500 young women have participated in her programs on a range of subjects, like modeling, fashion and manners. (In 2005, Cole became a certified expert in children’s etiquette.) She runs camps in Los Angeles, Miami, Toronto and Virginia, where it all started.

For Cole, teaching the next generation of models and fashion industry wanna-bes was a career switch that made sense once she became a mom.

Bill Blass Goes on Firing Spree

New York Magazine

Although Bill Blass's spring 2013 womenswear collection was "90 percent" finished and their usual stylist, Japanese Vogue's George Cortina, was rumored to be paid in full to work with the label during New York Fashion Week in September,* the brand abruptly decided to cancel the show entirely. (Other reasons to find this move odd, to say the least: They'd already secured a location, a PR agency, and a production agency for the show and purchased about $250,000 worth of Italian fabrics for the collection, according to WWD.) The label subsequently fired its entire womenswear team, including designer Jeffrey Monteiro.

Fern Mallis has revealed why she made the move from New York to India

Bloginity (blog)

The queen of New York Fashion Week made a shock decision to leave her post at global fashion management company IMG to branch out on her own. Speaking at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai – an event Fern assisted in creating in her previous role - Fern discussed how people close to her in the industry took the news she was starting her own consulting company, Fern Mallis LLC in India.

“They’re just completely gaga and want to come with me!” Fern exclaimed to the Huffington Post. “Everybody I know wants to be in India with me.”

The Lakme Fashion Week is important as it encourages, nurtures and discovers talented Indian designers. Not only is the event special for Fern due to her role in making it the success it is today, but she also likes that it reflects the country’s growing influence on all aspects of the fashion industry. India’s fabrics, the colors and the people’s style are just some of the aspects of the culture that New York fashionistas can’t get enough of.

MIAMI & SOUTH BEACH FASHION

Miami, FL is the third, and up & coming, official fashion center in this country. It is also the swimwear central. It is where most swimwear designers come the display their newest creations with the help of the many beautiful women that occupy their beaches, and the Gulf Coast.
Since fashion week Swim is about to begin, I figured I'd use this page to show the area's fashion.

Miami Designer Goes Mobile
LoNómada is not your average clothing boutique. For one, it's mobile, housed in a sleek 1979 vintage airstream trailer. Secondly, it's run by a fashion designer, the multi-talented Valeria Tiaga. Tiaga created LoNómada to offer her one-of-a-kind pieces in a bowl-you-over artistic setting.
“I wanted to create an atelier vibe,” she says, “with the option for transformation and performance.”
© LoNómada This transformation is the real genius behind LoNómada. The airstream has the ability to function as a traveling pop-up bazaar, showcasing film, photography, music, artwork and fashion, created by artists hand-picked by Tiaga. The concept is to bring together a group of artists in all different multimedia forms, and serve as platform for them to present their creations. With all this artistic expression right at your fingertips, LoNómada offers visitors a shopping experience unlike any other.

A Veritable Emporium of Good Taste
Shopping at Emporium is like going to hang out at your best friend’s house, and picking up some amazing things while you’re there. Owner Sara Zamikoff has assembled an impressive collection of clothing, accessories and giftable items that will have you wanting to buy every single thing you see. Located in Coral Gables, Emporium has been around for just over 4 years. Zamikoff’s concept was a one-stop-shop where women could pick up everything they need including gifts for friends, baby clothes and accessories, home and body fragrances and even styling consultations and in-home closet assistance. The result is a warm, inviting environment where you can pick from an eclectic assortment of hand-selected items.
Zamikoff is passionate about supporting local and independent designers. “I like to find different artisans and learn their stories,” she says. “I find that people are really missing that interpersonal aspect of shopping. When they know the designer it makes the piece all the more special.” Zamikoff organizes regular trunk shows so customers have the opportunity to meet the designers and even order custom pieces.
You’ll find clothing from Bianca Coletti and Nikki Poulos and Judith March, accessories from TAudrey, and Alex Hunt, alongside mainstream designers like BB Dakota, Miss Me, and Blank NYC. “I keep a balance of trendy and classic pieces,” Zamikoff says. “It’s important that my customers can find that trendy piece they are looking for but also take home an item that will last them for more than just one season.” The best part is the prices are not outrageous. If something is priced in the higher range, it’s because it comes from an independent designer who put real craftsmanship into the piece.

Step into L.A. Boudoir

If you’re a vintage lover (and really, who isn’t?), L.A. Boudoir is a treasure-trove just waiting to be discovered. Tucked away upstairs from the popular UVA69 restaurant in the tragically hip MIMO district, this vintage shop carries everything from burlesque lingerie to party dresses and everything in between.
and run by owner Lauren Arkin, L.A. Boudoir caters to a mix of clientele. From stylists and photographers looking for rental pieces for photo shoots, to partygoers looking for costumes, to vintage lovers scouring the racks for deals, Arkin has something for everyone. She’s even got a small selection of men and children’s clothing. While the main focus is lingerie, Arkin has an eye for the unique, and if you spend some time looking, you’ll score some seriously amazing finds at even more amazing prices (we scored an incredible black silk jumpsuit for $10)
. Arkin is a Miami native whose love of fashion started at an early age. She attended the acclaimed Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) where she studied costume design and immersed herself in the history of fashion. She started collecting vintage pieces at the age of 12, and always dreamed of opening her own store.

Setting Sail for Nic del Mar
by Ju'lia Samuels
The sibling-duo Jeanette Nicole and Lyanne Marie are a match made in fashion heaven. Their one-stop beach babe boutique, Nic del Mar, caters to the daring fashionistas who shop Acacia and swear by Tori Praver alike. The two sisters opened Nic del Mar in 2010 out of necessity. Their love for exotic vacation spots led to their interest in resort wear, and they wanted a place that would cater to the beach couture fashionista while not forgetting budget-conscious betties.
“We noticed that there weren’t a lot of places that you could go to and find bathing suits and cover-ups, at least not quality,” without spending your life savings, Nicole says. © Nic del MarBut finding a great suit is only half the problem. Finding something that fits right is another thing all together. That's why Nic Del Mar lets you mix and match two piece sizes, so that you're sure to get a suit that fits properly. “Most places don’t let you do that," Nicole says, "but we really try to accommodate everyone. Some Miami women are flat-chested and have bigger bottoms.” Nicole and Lyanne have combined their individual styles to provide their customers with variety and flavor. “We make a great combination. I tend to be a little more extravagant, and my sister is a little more simple and subtle and we have those customers who are either or,” Nicole says. That variety can be found in the range of desiners that Nic del Mar carries. Think Mara Hoffman, Indah, Caffe and Diane Von Furstenberg.
One step inside Nic Del Mar, you know you're somewhere special. Nicole and Marie have created an atmosphere that allows patrons to take a brief hiatus from their everyday lives and escape into a vacation-like setting you don't usually get when you're shopping. Beach scented candles, a warm ocean blue chandelier and dark wooden floors all blend together nicely creating the inviting atmosphere that feels a little bit like heaven on earth. “As soon as you walk in, you feel like you are going on vacation," Nicole says. "We really wanted it to feel like you were at a resort."

South Miami's Favorite Boutique Prepares for Fall

Walking into Kristine Michael, it’s easy to see why this popular South Miami boutique has been open for nearly two decades (they turn 20 this December). Owners Barbara Hinterkopf and Jeanie Bonner have filled the store with beautiful pieces from top designers including the ultra-sophisticated Theyskens Theory, Vince, A.L.C., Joie, Haute Hippy and Elizabeth and James, amongst others. Their staff is warm and friendly (they have only had one turnover in 15 years, unheard of in the boutique business), and will work with you to help curate the perfect wardrobe.
Sort through the racks and you’ll find silky, romantic blouses from Joie, chunky knits from Vince, colorful denim from J Brand and eye-catching dresses from Haute Hippy and Halston Herritage. The only problem? It’s all going to go in your “yes” pile. “We offer lifestyle dressing for a customer who loves fashion and wants to look current, but not necessarily trendy” says Hinterkopf. “We cherry pick the best pieces from all the collections, so our customers get the finest of what each brand has to offer” she says. The clientele spans a vast age range - from 20-70 years old, Kristine Michael can make anyone look chic. “We get a lot of mothers who shop with us, and sooner or later their daughters become clients also” Hinterkopf explains, “from working professionals to grandmothers, they all shop here, and most of our clients are locals."
Because Hinterkopf, Bonner and their super stylish assistant buyer Erin Young have handpicked each piece, you are guaranteed to want to take home almost everything you see in the store. As you wander around you’ll find everything from amazing printed scarves from Theodora and Callum, accessories from Chan Luu and Dannijo, hats from Eugenia Kim, handbags from the beloved Diane von Furstenberg and über-chic clothing from interior designer turned clothing designer Kelly Wearstler. Sort through the racks and you’ll find silky, romantic blouses from Joie, chunky knits from Vince, colorful denim from J Brand and eye-catching dresses from Haute Hippy and Halston Herritage. The only problem? It’s all going to go in your “yes” pile.MFbFor Fall, Kristine Michael has you covered for all your wardrobe essentials. “Fall is all about color” says Hinterkopf. “Colored denim, colorful prints, color blocking; it’s all meant to be mixed together to create a very chic look”. This trend is perfect for the notoriously flamboyant Miamians who usually shy away from the muted, grey-toned fall collections. Hinterkopf also recommends embracing the longer silhouettes to stay current for fall. Hemlines are dropping and maxi skirts and dresses are in abundance. Pair your look with a chunky statement necklace from Dannijo, and you’re good to go.
When you’re getting ready to plan your fall shopping list, here are the top five fall pieces to invest in from Kristine Michael: A black blazer from Theyskens Theory with the signature V cutout on the back neckline, colorful denim from J Brand, a silky printed blouse from A.L.C. or Theory (the white silk tie-up blouse from Theory is a must-have), a Dannijo statement necklace and a Theodora and Callum scarf. And voila! Fall chic.
Sign up for the Kristine Michael mailing list (you can join through their Facebook page or stop by the store) to get insiders info on events and sales. They host a not-to-be-missed Girls Night Out every second Thursday of the month.

The Swimwear 2011 Designers:

*Written by Lauren Doyle with Andrea Ocampo-unless otherwise noted

Backstage Beauty at Cia.Maritima
Cia.Maritima delivered a rockin' runway show with the help of an all- Van Halen sound track and some seriously hot swimwear. But before the models could rock their floral-and-leopard-print swimwear, they had to get the hair and makeup to help them look like they just walked off a beach (in a Bond movie). To help them, was Dean Banowetz of InStyler, and James Vincent of MAKE UP FOR EVER. Andrea Ocampo spoke with both Banowetz and Vincent to get the goods on how the models got their looks.

Lisa Blue Has a Tale to Tell
As the story goes, Lisa Burke, the mind behind the swimwear line Lisa Blue, had been ill the day she paddled out to see some whales she spotted while surfing in Tonga. After being out for about an hour and still not getting very close to them, she turned around to head back to sure. But she took one last look behind her, and when she did, a whale surfaced just a few meters away from her. The experience thrilled her, so much so that she decided right then and there to do everything she could to protect whales. So she started Lisa Blue, a swimwear line that donates 25% of its profits to whale conservation in Australia.
When we talked to her at MBFW, the whales were on her mind, but so was her dramatic, fashion-forward runway show that had just ended moments before.

Aqua Di Lara Shines
One look at this bold and unapologetic line and you know why Aqua Di Lara is a favorite among models and celebs. Reyhan Sofraci's swimwear line will get you attention, and lots of it. What can you expect when you're lounging surfside in a black cutout bikini or yukking it up at the bar in a bright tie-dyed kaftan? Not yet famous? That's OK, you can still buy these hot little numbers come 2012.

Caffe Swimwear Goes Wild
Caffe Swimwear doesn't make swimwear for everyone. But if you're playful and love to wear bold colors, you'll feel right at home in Caffe Swimwear's bright, bright solids and wild, tropical prints. Standout pieces from their Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2012 swim show include a fuchsia bandeau bikini with orange and turquoise beaded embellishments, and an orange, turquoise and black leopard-print one-piece with a plunging V-neck.
After the show, we headed back stage to talk to designer Paula Saavedra about how the pieces came together.

Living the LUXE Life
One of the standout runway shows at MBFW was the one given by well-known line LUXE by Lisa Vogel. One look at Vogel's sexy take on classic silhouettes and you'll see why. Andrea Ocampo had a chance to talk to Vogel backstage before the show to get the scoop on what's in store for 2012.

L*Space Takes Off
L*Space, the much-loved swimwear line by Monica Wise, rocked the Grand Cabana Friday night at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The theme of the show was travel, and toward that models walked the runway carrying suitcases and cameras – seemingly ready to see the world. Come 2012, will you be ready to take off with L*Space?

Crystal Jin - In Full Color
Crystal Jin is known for its chic eveningwear-meets-swimwear pieces that look best-suited for the decks of private yachts and swank hotels. This year, Crystal Jin's elegant silhouettes met an explosion of color, as designer Crystal Eley used prints that captured the colors and patterns of American Southwest. Of course, there was still plenty of basic black for those more austere Crystal Jin fans not yet ready to take a leap into the rainbow. But for those who dig a little contrast (blue and orange were standout, oft-repeated, motifs) there was a lot to love about the house's 2012 MBFW show.

Poko Pano - Portuguese for Love?
Paola Robba's 2012 Poko Pano swimwear collection can be summed up in three words: Tropical, clean, effortless. In fact, there was so much to love we wished the pieces came down the runway with price tags attached. And we hope that the buyers sitting in the front row during the show felt the same way. Because we can't wait to see these pieces everywhere next year!

Leah Madden - Naughty and Nice
There were two sides to the White Sands Australia runway show at this year's MBFW - naughty, and nice. Naughty came in the form of zebra-print swimsuits and kaftans, while nice took the form of the same pieces in a demure floral print. Both sides of Leah Madden's 2012 swimwear line were equally craveable, albeit for different reasons. Which is your favorite?

Swim Week Saves the Best for Last
by Joanna Mazewski
It might have been the last night of showings for this year’s Mercedes-Benz Miami Fashion Swim Week, but that doesn’t mean the excitement has cooled down in anyway. The Grande Cabana tent along with the outside Oasis still buzzed with excited attendees and busy production staff as models strutted their stuff in shows that continued to showcase sexy and innovative swimwear that was heavy on heritage and light on fabric.
Monday night’s shows continued to showcase ravishing designs with highlights including the new trend of using pants and one-piece and two-piece designs in playful cuts, cover-ups in vibrant hues along with animal and desert-inspired prints, and dare we say, lots of bohemian-inspired spandex

Swim Week Rolls On
by Joanna Mazewski
Sunday night’s shows at the Mercedes-Benz Miami Fashion Week might have been met with a downpour of rain, but it didn’t stop the designers from showing off their trendy collections in the most exciting atmosphere we’ve seen yet (Thursday night might have had the stars, but Sunday night was when the real party started.)
Brazilian designers Cia.Maritima and SoCal gal Lisa Vogel put on shows with big hair, fashion and attitude with energetic soundtracks to match, while designers such as Luli Fama and Lisa Blue put on shows that highlighted their heritage and roots. There was no denying that each collection was all about sexy, cheeky cuts, highlighting cutting-edge trends in both day and evening swimwear.

Swimwear Goes Tribal
by Joanna Mazewski
Sixties and seventies-inspired prints ruled the runway for day three of the Mercedes Benz Miami Fashion Week swim shows. Dolores Cortes’s flamingo-colored and tribal romper swimsuits along with Mara Hoffman’s high-wasted cutouts and ultra-bright leggings were a shear contrast to Friday night’s sophisticated, jet-setting look, with more of a globe-trotting, jungle-meets-boho style mix and feel.
Along with the wild-natured collections was no lack of sexy, glam and sophisticated looks offered by both Caffe Swimwear and Aqua di Lara, whose highlights included ultra luxe and flattering-fit pieces and monokinis that reminded us that even though bikinis are going tribal, stylish ,and high-end glam in evening swimwear still offers more fierceness on the catwalk.
Swim Week Heats Up by Joanna Mazewski The world looks to Miami when it comes to the latest trends in cutting edge swimwear, yet it looks like Miami’s inspiration is going global. The second day of Miami’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Swim Week made us long for the soft white sands of Bondi Beach, maybe learn a little Portuguese and take off to Saint Barths with an NYC-inspired cocktail in hand. Needless to say, it had us wanting to dust off our passports and travel to one of the world’s most exotic beach locales with our favorite designer’s bikini, of course.

Betsy Johnson Hits the Sagamore
by Liz Tracy
The stark designs of the Sagamore Hotel are accented with tasteful contemporary art. On the penthouse deck, overlooking the evening ocean, a more playful and colorful art form was displayed last night at the first show of MOD Swim Week 2012, which featured designs by Betsey Johnson. The fabrics spoke of the 50s, but the silhouettes spanned many decades of feminine fashion. The show was guided by the aesthetic not only of the recognizable platinum blonde designer, but by Pamela Wasabi of Wasabi Fashion Kult, another style-eyed lady with standout hair. Wasabi’s cosplay look was reflected in the extreme geisha-influenced makeup. The models’ faces were painted white with large triangles marked under each eye, and signature tiny red lips. Models also had crowns of fuzzy, colorful locks. Yarn extensions added to their hair gave it a cotton candy texture and appeal. The accessories included African-inspired beaded bracelets, multiples of which were worn on each wrist. Bracelets seem to be the jewelry of this and next summer. The bikinis and summer dresses that sashayed down the makeshift runway were classic Betsey: floral, fun, and pink. Many of the suits featured bandeau tops with gingham, rose, and eyelet patterns. The standout look was a halter top and a simple suit bottom, featuring small white swans on a black background with thick white ruffles and black piping. The beachy ensemble was garnished with tiny pink roses, adding a fun youthfulness to the suit. One model wore the swan bottoms paired with a transparent black long-sleeved top with a heart motif. It was the perfect look for a late afternoon on the sand, with the purpose of keeping you warm while still looking cool. Ms. Johnson didn’t skimp on the bows or ruffles, but there were also hints of the streamlined eighties. One suit that seemed to impress the audience kept the gingham-rose fabric of the 50s, but had a nicely fitting, plain halter top and origami cut bottom, offering clean lines while remaining feminine. One suit had suggestive embroidered roses on each breast. It was tastefully paired with a plain red bottom, tied on either side with bows. It was both wearable, sexy, and mature.

Luli Fama
The pouring rain outside The Raleigh’s pool deck didn’t stop this show from having the biggest party atmosphere yet. Hosted inside the Oasis tent, it was undeniably hot and packed, but Cuban-born, Miamian Luli Fama put on a show (and we really do mean show) that looked like a Rio de Janiero-meets-Havana-meets-Miami ultimate soiree that went from samba sexy to Club Tropicana to pulsating nightclub beats all within the first ten minutes. Fun, young, and sexy, Luli Fama’s collection was full of cheeky cuts, ruffled bandeau ruched bikinis and key hole tops that would work perfect from Miami’s white sandy beaches and straight to the nightclubs. Although there were plenty of pieces that went back to the bikini basics, Luli’s hip, streamlined designs were sophisticated, festive, and flirty. Electric blue and pretty in pink looks ruled this show along with mini twist dresses, fringe studded accessories, and sequined bikinis. A strapless “Pachanga” romper was a show standout, as well as a crystallized sexy multi-strap v-bandeau ruched back monokini and crystallized ruffled cover up that was matched with a Cuban-inspired crystal-studded fedora that closed the show and was a notable nod to the designer’s Cuban roots.

Lisa Blue Lisa Blue is one of many Australian designers to bring their collections to Miami, but her collection went one step further in highlighting her country’s culture by incorporating original Aboriginal artwork in her pieces, and even bringing an aboriginal model to walk the runway in the swimwear designer’s stunning pieces.
Perhaps the most creative show we’ve seen yet, the Byron Bay-based designer showcased an explosion of color, with plenty of blues, purples, and blacks that were combined with a galactic theme with metallic panels of gold and silver. There were plenty of body suits with interesting Sci-Fi cutouts and bikinis with high-wasted bottoms that were accessorized with metallic studs. The collection was incredibly young, fresh and trendy and wearable with pieces that looked like they would work well with a pair of jeans or skirt for a nighttime look.
The final night on Monday will close Mercedes Benz Miami Fashion Week with show offerings from diNeila Brazil, a group show featuring A.Z. Araujo, Aguaclara, Aquarella, and Have Faith Swimwear along with individual shows from Kooey Swimwear Australia (their first solo show in the U.S.), Nicolita, Sonia Vera Swimwear and Jogo Beach.

Adding Diesel to the Fire
by Joanna Mazewski
From Collins Avenue to Lincoln Road, there are three syllables rolling off everybody’s tongues: bik-in-i. Yep, we’re at the height of swim season and what better place to showcase the hottest bikini styles for next year than at Miami’s very own Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Swim Week kicked off in kind last night at The Raleigh, and to say it was hot is an understatement. Edgy Italian designer Diesel left their tight-fitting jeans in Milan and kicked off the festivities with an opening night show followed by the Official Kick-Off Party on deck of The Raleigh’s legendary pool. The party was sponsored by SKYY Vodka so you know the drinks were flowing. Before the party, Diesel showcased its 2012 swimwear collection inside the Cabana Grande, with shades of green, blue, and grey dominating the palette. The collection seemed to be basic at its best, with fun, flirty colors, and cuts that were designed with fun in mind. As if to demonstrate this point, the runway models held an impromptu beach volley ball game outside the cabana after the show.
The women’s swimwear collection seemed to be going back to bikini origins, with cuts already familiar on the beach, including halter tops, full bottoms, and the occasional board shorts look. One-piece suits also fluttered down the runway, with simple black and grey being the designer color of choice. Also, coming down the runway were easy, tropical prints. If the Diesel show is any indication, you might want to leave this season's pastels at home next summer (or get creative with an at-home tie dye kit before you hit the beach). And fashion-loving guys better be ready to see more form-fitting styles make waves on the beach next year. (Did that temperature just rise again?) At the Diesel show, Speedo-inspired swimwear seemed to be the de facto look. The Diesel design team must really be on a mission in revolutionizing men’s swimwear, or in the least attempt to recreate scenes from the Italian Riviera across the world over. Simply put, tight, so-called Euro trash swimwear is preparing to invade our shores. Not ready to go super-skimpy? Don't worry guys, there were plenty of board shorts coming down the runway too.
Adding some spice to the show, MTV celeb Kristen Cavallari left her drama in The Hills and checked in to the 305 to add a little star power to the runway. Cavallari strutted down the runway in a spectacular cobalt blue swimsuit, a color befitting the night (it is, after all, SKYY Vodka’s signature color). On another turn down the runway, Cavallari wore a one-of-a-kind glass bikini. Looking every inch the Cali girl, the socialite and part-time philanthropist looked fab, and more importantly, at ease on the runway before changing into a body-hugging short orange number for the after party. Cavallari wasn’t there without her very own line of support, though. Fiancé and NFL star Jay Cutler was spotted in the first row sitting next to “Dancing With the Stars” alum Chad Ochocinco along with Brooklyn-based rapper Theophilus London. Ok, so Cutler might have looked out of his element, but Ochocinco and London certainly didn’t mind the eye candy strutting down the runway while they snapped their favorite designs with their white iPhones. Adding to the celebrity factor, “Gossip Girl” Jessica Szohr was on hand to lend her talents on the turntables during the show before making her way to the after party in a bright blue mini-jumper, which seemed to be the after party color of the night.
At the party, celebrities, along with select fashion enthusiasts, models, and designers all mingled poolside at the invite-only soiree, where SKYY Miami Spice was the drink of choice and the chocolate-dipped sprinkled pretzels reminded us what this upcoming bikini season might be all about: flirt and fun. Sure, Diesel’s swimsuits were sexy, but not in the sex-only-sells department. This collection was made for jumping, swimming and rolling on South Beach’s white sands. If there was a message to be made, it was that basic fun was back, replacing the swimwear-meets-eveningwear look we’ve seen for the past few seasons. And with that, we breathe a giant sigh of relief.

The Luxe Look of Lurex
by Jordan Wolf

© ASOS / NW3 by Hobbs Madely

Tis the season for sparkle, and Lurex is our new favorite way to work it. Let us turn you on to the textile terminology; Lurex is the metallic thread responsible for making stretchy sweaters shimmer and nubby tweeds subtly shine. Sometimes the luminous threads are abundant, lighting up a glamorous piece with multifaceted reflections, while other pieces utilize a few strategic threads to set-off a texture or pattern. Sparkly stuff was seen on the runways at Etro, where Lurex threads infiltrated jackets, striped sweaters, and checked skirts; then there were Ralph Lauren’s demure Lurex-infused pencil skirts and high-shine suit separates. Even Missoni’s trademark Technicolor knits got a shot of the sparkly stuff, metallic threads weaving in and out of zig-zagged dresses and short skirts, jackets, scarves, and leggings. Lurex made repeat appearances at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Comme de Garçons, and Max Mara.
So step up your seasonal garb with some shimmering threads – here’s six ways to work it Miami-style.
Metallic pieces are go-to for cocktail hour – swap out your LBD for something sparkly. The ASOS Midi Dress in Metallic Knit ticks off three Fall-trends (slits, midi-length, and metallic) in one awesome dress. Bronze metallic stripes set off a background of aquamarine, while the pared-down shape insures you can easily layer a cool cropped jacket on top if it gets chilly. We’d love to see this with a sleek pair of opaque tights and impossibly strappy metallic heels for contrast. Another cool cocktail option is this Miu Miu Knit Dress with Lurex Details. It has the appearance of an oversized sweatshirt, but is glammed-up with a bevy of shiny fibers woven throughout the knit-like stars in a violet sky. Go bare-legged if you dare – add chunky wedges or solid suede ankle boots to keep the proportions right – or easily wear it on top of leggings and flats to dress it down. A Bronze Tee by Gucci is a fab alternative to a cocktail dress when paired with slim black pants, pumps, and a leather moto jacket. The all-over metallic tee would also go nicely tucked into a voluminous, midi-length party skirt, especially in a femme floral or polka-dot print. On the shorter side, there’s the ASOS Metallic Striped Knitted Skater Skirt; team this figure-flattering, fit-and-flare skirt with a silky black blouse, Mary-janes, and gold and silver bangle bracelets. Experiment with making it feel more casual, maybe by pairing it with a distressed denim jacket or chambray skirt and sneakers. Finally, two twinkling toppers; a tweedy, metallic jacket adds instant polish to even the simplest jeans + white tee combo. This Virginie Castaway Jacket in Lurex Tweed has structure, shine, and versatility. Wear it to dress up denim or a simple black shift, or treat it like blazer and pair it with a sleek jewel-toned blouse and a curvaceous pencil skirt. Also, know that sparkle doesn’t have to feel too fancy; case in point, a stripey mohair cardigan delicately dotted with Lurex threads by Markus Lupfer. We love the bright orange and navy, a classically preppy color-combo updated by the metallic-factor. Throw it on to add personality to basic jeans, or button it up over a collared shirt and add a pleated skirt, loafers and knee socks for school-girl appeal.

With just about three weeks away, here are Some of the designers:

Lisa Blue Lisa Blue began with one girl’s dream’. A few years ago I, Lisa Burke, traveled to Tonga with the sole purpose to swim with humpback whales. I came face to face with these 15 meters, 20 ton, gentle, ancient giants of the ocean.
No words can describe this experience.
The mother and baby whale approached me. The baby came so close to me as though to touch me that I backed up. The eyes, only a foot away, looked straight into my soul. My heart burst open. In that moment I promised that I would do what I could to help protect them and their environment. In spite of the history of humans killing these angelic beings they look at us with such immense unconditional love.

MARA HOFFMAN SWIM

Mara Hoffman is a fashion designer currently headquartered in New York City. Her namesake line draws much of its inspiration from nature, mythology and fantasy, as well as many of the rich indigenous folk art histories found around the world. Part dream sequence and part anthropology, Hoffman’s voice is at once playful, adventurous, and daring. She has garnered widespread attention among industry press, media and retailers for the originality of her designs and fearless approach to print and color.
Hoffman began designing under her own label in 2000. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from Parson’s School of Design, and pursued additional studies at Central Saint
Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Possessing a fiery courage to take risks, Hoffman left school armed with a strong sartorial knowledge and started work in pursuit of her vision. Creation was a natural product of her process; she experimented, cut, stitched, dipped, dyed, and wore her ideas. No surprise then that Hoffman met her first buyer on the streets of New York when shop owner/costume designer Patricia Field approached her to inquire about what she was wearing. Her first designs made their debut in Field’s New York City boutique, House of Field, where a loyal client base took root.

History of The Raleigh Hotel
The Raleigh Hotel is a lush sanctuary nestled among Miami Beach’s promenade of art deco hotels, which line the famous Collins Avenue of Miami Beach’s southern tip, or South Beach. The Raleigh’s property, adjoining Collins Avenue and the white sand, expansive beaches of Miami Beach, encompasses a wealth of exceptional amenities and sites to explore.
It’s time for a good old fashioned pat on the shoulder. (A gentle one please - we’re aging.) This year, the Raleigh turns 70. In 1940, when The Raleigh hotel was contracted to be built, Frank Delano Roosevelt was fireside chatting, Winston Churchill was delivering some of modern history’s best speeches and John Lennon was being born. It was a pre-war boom time in Miami Beach, a period in which nearly 3,000 hotel rooms were built in two years (41 hotels in total). Americans were discovering, as they continue to discover today, that the pleasures of the islands could be had with less money and less travel in Miami Beach.
When L. Murray Dixon, noted architect of the era and creator of many of Miami’s trophy buildings, set forth to design this hotel, he most likely didn’t realize that his imprint on the Miami Beach landscape would be deeper felt by this project than any of his others. And yet, The Raleigh has endured unlike nearly any other hotel from the era. It remains a favorite amongst locals, amongst celebrities looking for anonymity and amongst guests with an appreciation for impeccable design and the sort of friendly hospitality that makes them feel as if they’re home.
And while we’d like to think that things have evolved greatly from the ‘40s, we’ll let you be the judge of that. One thing we can promise you: while decades have come and gone, while trends have ebbed and flowed, and even as The Raleigh has seen a few facelifts (this is South Beach, after all), The Raleigh’s commitment to uphold an unprecedented level of hospitality and to provide its guests with the unspoiled charms of Miami Beach remain unchanged.

MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK -SWIM (In Miami)

You've seen me talking about the fashion week seaon beginning. Well Fashion Week-Swim is the first of the season in this country.

The fist designer I covered was Lisa Blue. AS it turns out, it was the first show that opened MBFWM also.

I was sick last year, and taken away from the business the year before that. And with a new camera, it took a while to get used to shooting again, but I catch on quickly.

What caught my eye quickly, were the number of African American & Hispanic models that were in the show. It seems that the three big Fashion Week Shows are actually, or subconciously divided by race. Ladies, it may be smaller, but this is is the place if you are a model of darker complextion. Till tomorrow. A big night tonight.

The only thing that I disliked, was the lack of knowledge, thereby photo-etiquette of the photographers: The people who were hired to video the show had their video and tripod on the (with three others) whom each were blocking at least two photographers each. Photo-wise, it was a mess, and smaller risers than those at NY Fashion Week.
But in reality, it was a great show-models, belly dancers, Chinese dragon show, and funky head gear. Take a look at the pictures, and enjoy yourself.

Day 2:
From 6pm till 10pm I ran back and forth between tents. My legs we're worn out. It's been two years since I was involed with any Fashion Week, and it showed. I rocked back & forth between people making sure that I got a clear shot. I was able to hit every show today, except for the fist show (E'CLAIRE'E). The work wasn't bad, and by the 9pm show, I was back in stride.

By the close of the night, a few thing happened: I realized that my wallet was left in my room & 2: As I was working, I was asked to copy some of my photos to an
hispanic magazine. By the time I goback to my hotel room, I was so exhausted, that I actually left my key in my door.

DAY-3

Other than my very sore legs, I had reached my stride. I was able to get shots practically any where I wanted. There were a couple blocks by people, by I tried to det around the opstacles-and produced a product that was perfect. This was my day. Everything was coming out correctly. The lighting, the camera settings, even the models.

Here we had caffe'Swimear, Aqua di Lara, Mara Hoffman Swim, xtralife Lycr Brand, and Cia Maritima. Great swimwear designers. My thoughts is if you were a swimwear designer, you should be here. You'll notice That I even have a lot of headshots taken this day. I saw a crowd of people waing an hispanis flaag. It was so crowded, that I thought it was a parade. Only when I got close that I realized it was just a celebrity sighting-I have absolutely no idea who it was.

Day four:
Today might become a washout, but we'll see...

I did go to Fashion Week today. Sadly, I got into a couple of arguments over tape markings under the tent. What I'm finding is that people don't know any better. When on the risers, if you are not a house, or main photographer, it doesn't matter. Everyone needs a spot. I had two guys (and one woman) kept telling me that I was in their space. One guy said he was getting security (he showed up just before the show, and I wasn't moving then-as I knew the rules, but he didn't). As usual nothing happened. On the second, he came in a little bit earlier, and I was able to find a better spot. People don't understand. I think that this will be my last fashion week here. I don't understand the mess here in Miami. In NY, the event people make it very clear to you, but those same people tend to let Miami just run wild.

The only show I didn't attend was the last one because I was STARVING and just plain tired. The shows were beautiful. Red Carter put on a beautiful show to start it off. I desperately needed food, and my hotel was no help. So while that last show started, I walked down to Walgreens (where I saw some interesting people) and picked up some granola bars.

Day Five:
This was the final day of the shows. In Miami, there are a lot of women in bikinis, but there wasn't much of a finale. As far as shows, I'd give it a B, but as crownd control goes, it gets a C.Too many crowd distractions in my opinion. What saved the show were the many beautiful women & exotic clothing in the crowd. The other saving gracr came at the end:

I was pointed out the number of NY models in the swim show. That made me wonder where were all the swimwear models on my facebook page. As I was just about to post that thought, I noticed a picture of a model-in a pictue I also took at Fashion Week. While MALA was one of my friends, I don't think I ever said anything to her. This past week was her birthday, and I realized that I had befriended a Miami model-friend; on Facebook no less.

The ending shows used more designs, and a lot of variety. To tell you the truth, if you've never gone to a fashion week, this would be a good start; but for me I'm calling it quits. Heck, I even got hired.

L.A. FASHION & FASHION WEEK

L.A. is presently regarded as the second major fashion center of the country

/

**This is copied from the L.A. Fashion Week web page-since I missed it, and don't have any plans to go over to Los Angeles at the moment.

Fall 2012 collections started today(3/9) with installations and runway presentations at Ace Gallery, produced by the talented and spirited Concept Fashion Week team. Showing at Concept on Friday and Saturday are MIKE VENSEL, HENRY DUARTE, BRYAN HEARNS, PAUL REDMOND, MEMENIC, NUVULA, S&G, CHAMBERS, THAI NUYGEN, CURLY V, BELLE N MATISSE, ELAINE ALLEN, ZUBAUEN, GYPSY JUNKIES, LAILI LAU, NAMI, and JEN AWAD.
One of the most inspired events of the week is a benefit for the A+D Museum with CELEBRATE THE WEARABLE as the gala theme on Saturday, March 10. A runway show at 8pm and live auction of wearable creations by 40+ designers, architects, artists and creators including KARIM RASHID, RICHARD MEIER, TRINA TURK, JONATHAN ADLER, STEWART + BROWN, JOHN BALDESSARI, DIANA ENG, FITZU, LOUISE GREEN MILLINERY, JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC, VALERJ POBEGA and L.A. EYEWORKS make this a must-see for the design-inclined.
On Monday March 12, Style Fashion Week will pick up the ball with a series of runway shows through Friday at Vibiana, one of the most beautiful venues in Los Angeles. Collections on the runway this season include SKINGRAFT, MILA HERMANOVSKI, L’UNE COLLECTION, STOP STARING!, INA SOLTANI, XCVI, FURNE ONE and OCTAVIO CARLIN. The week concludes on Friday with GO RED for Women Celebrity Red Dress Fashion Show for the American Heart Association. These events coincide with Market Week in the showrooms and trade shows (Coeur, Designers & Agents, Focus and more) in the wholesale showroom buildings clustered near the intersection of 9th & Los Angeles streets in the Fashion District.
Peppered throughout the week are the individualists and the pioneers, those who don’t conform to a traditional presentation style or collective venue. Among these is PROJECT ETHOS which has — for many seasons now — inspired both club-goers and the press with presentations of multi-faceted creative talent in Hollywood and now broadcasting on the internet. New this season is an ECOCOUTURE event at the W Hotel, and returning with individual presentations are designers SUE WONG (at her atelier) and LAUREN ELAINE (at the W Hotel.) Plus more emerging designers and fashion happenings populating the fashion calendar daily.
Fashion Week closes with LA Fashion Weekend March 16th-18th, the tented extravaganza at Sunset Gower Studios captained by Mikey Koffman, a fashion industry professional and showroom owner turned reality TV personality and LA Fashion Week impresario. On Friday BETSEY JOHNSON, DINA BAR-EL and VILORIJA will take the runway. Featured brands on Saturday include ASHLEE BROOKS, SARAHI HOUSE OF FASHION, LAHA THE GLAMOROUS GIRL and SKINEEZ SKINCAREWEAR. LA Fashion Weekend has corralled the support of local news KTLA 5 to broadcast the Sunday presentations which have an appropriate reality-celeby-TV bent: GOSSIP GIRL BY ROMEO & JULIET COUTURE inspired by CW’s Gossip Girl, LIZZIE PARKER from the new Fashion Star TV show, and ALEXIS BY TAL SHEYN, designed with Alexis from Real Housewives of Orange County Season 6.
For details, check the Calendar. Please note that most events are INVITE ONLY and not open to the public.
I will continue to update on L.A. fashion

Concept L.A Fashion Week brings art, fashion and culture together

The events comprising “L.A. Fashion Week” which are being held this weekend through next week may have some slapdash scheduling and production, but you wouldn’t know it from the Concept L.A event at the Ace gallery in Mid-Wilshire. The second floor space hosted several local designers as well as an artist duo called The Date Farmers Friday night, drawing a sizable crowd, as well as shows and installations from designers both established and brand-new. Designers Mike Vensel, Martin Martin, Valerj Pobega and Liason displayed a selection of their fall 2011 collections in small semi-secluded rooms that lined a hallway en route to a runway. Vensel showed two vivid red dresses worn by models perched on a large rock. The dresses looked like luxe Snuggies situated in the middle of the desert. The color was intense and alluring, but the silhouettes were shapeless and robe like.
Husband and wife design duo and veterans of the L.A fashion scene Martin Martin were inspired to create their fall collection based on the idea of deconstruction. An all white, gray and black line, each piece was stark, modern and sculptural. A standout piece was a butter-soft tailored black leather jacket with an interesting pleated detail on the back.
Valerj Pobega’s line was vaudeville meets 1930s Berlin, with green wool army blanket-looking capes that had medallion brooches at the neck and were painted with star graphics. The pieces were styled on mannequins wearing gas masks and a few models who accompanied the designer at her station had Marilyn Manson-esque running eye makeup and bondage-inspired dresses festooned with an undulating ruffled collar.
Newcomer Alyson Leif, whose line of lingerie called Liason hits stores for the first time this fall, is taking a high-end approach to underpinnings. The former denim designer and current keyboard player for the band The Meek uses all silk and chiffon to create tap shorts, art deco inspired bras, robes and nightgowns.

VOGUE NEWS:

Vogue moves to limit too-young, too-skinny models from its pages around the world

Washington Post

NEW YORK — Vogue magazine, perhaps the world’s top arbiter of style, is making a statement about its own models: Too young and too thin is no longer in.

They agreed to “not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder,” and said they will ask casting directors to check IDs at photo shoots and fashion shows and for ad campaigns. The move is an important one for the fashion world, said former model Sara Ziff, who was discovered at 14 and has since founded The Model Alliance, dedicated to improving the working conditions of models and persuading the industry to take better care of its young.

Vogue's New Beauty Standard: No Underage Models Or Eating Disorders

Forbes

Marc Jacobs, for example, flouted the guidelines and featured underage girls in his Spring/Summer 2012 presentation at February's New York Fashion Week. “I do the show the way I think it should be, and not the way somebody tells me it should be,” Mr. Jacobs said at the time.
Beginning with the June issue of Vogue, which hits newsstands this month, readers can expect healthier beauties in its pages. The New York Times reported this morning that all 19 international editions of Vogue have adopted a policy that sets a strong precedent in the health and age of its models.

Skeptics question whether Vogue went far enough to promote healthier models

London Fashion Week designers signed a contract with the British Fashion Council Fashion Council to use models who are at least 16.

But boring isn't the only way to do a pared-down look. Exotic skins -- and many more faux exotic skins -- can bridge the gap between too much and not enough.

Choices go from neon-embossed leathers that mimic python and ostrich, to rare and very expensive tree-frog skin. It's mostly accessories, but there are a lot of skin-inspired printed fabrics out there, too.

Ryan Lochte Is the Fourth Man to Ever Cover Vogue

New York Magazine

Ryan Lochte, a six-time Olympic-medal-winning swimmer, becomes the fourth man to ever cover American Vogue for the magazine's June issue, which also features soccer player Hope Solo and tennis champion Serena Williams (both of whom are also Vogue cover first-timers, although Serena and her sister Venus have been featured in the magazine several times). This is the first time a man has ever been on the cover of Vogue without a female model: The previous male cover stars — Richard Gere, George Clooney, and Lebron James — were photographed with Cindy Crawford, Gisele, and Gisele again, respectively. You can see those covers in our slideshow.
So, what does it mean that three athletes — one of them male — are on this month's cover? Anna Wintour's inclination to marry fashion and sports is a canny one, and it's a direction she's been taking for some time now. She frequently attends basketball games and tennis matches in the New York area, but she also invites athletes into the fashion world, hosting them at Vogue events and featuring them in the magazine. Putting three of them on the cover may be a watershed moment, but it's been a long time coming.

Of course, [Anna]Wintour is clearly aware of the overlaps between the sports and fashion worlds. Sure, a lot of fashion fans may not be interested in sports — and vice versa — but the two industries have a lot in common. Their stars become huge celebrities. Both embrace extreme physical ideals, nutty personalities, and showiness. What athletes wear, both in and out of the game, is carefully examined. The way people define themselves by what they wear is not unlike how people define themselves by certain sports teams. Fashion and sports are both utterly frivolous and culturally essential. Both can involve more than a fair amount of spandex, glitter, and sequins.

Calvin Klein's Costa stirring more attention

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Costa has waited — patiently — to make his big splash.

He jumped in as creative director for womenswear at Calvin Klein with both feet when he was handpicked by Klein almost a decade ago, but he's been a behind-the-scenes player, slowly, steadily building up his portfolio and profile while staying true to the house's DNA of minimalist, modern design.

He has scored some big awards, including twice being named best women's designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and winning a national design award from the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Museum. He's also had some memorable red-carpet moments — Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence wore his designs at last year's Oscars and Emily Blunt was dressed in Calvin Klein at the Met Gala last week — just to name a few. Still, he doesn't make a lot of noise, and he doesn't generate the gossipy whisper campaigns that the fashion crowd often eats up.

The Preakness is a season unto itself at local boutiques

Lisa Schatz starts her Preakness shopping eight months early, at the September fashion trade shows in New York City. In addition to her regular buys for spring inventory, she's learned to add items featuring bold colors and fun prints that will stand out at Maryland's biggest horse race.

Usually boutique owners purchase clothes for four seasons — five, if you count resorts. But in Baltimore, where Preakness-goers buy duds that sometimes veer from national spring trends, window displays are peppered with color combinations such as yellow and black, bold prints and funky hats that reflect the quirky traditions of the race. Preakness is its own buying season.

Five top models-turned-actors

Seattle Post Intelligencer

BY CHRISTY LEMIRE, AP Movie Critic FILE

Travelation.com/Southwest

Ashton Kutcher: The 6-foot-2 Kutcher dropped out of the University of Iowa, where he'd planned to study biochemical engineering, after an agent recruited him at a bar to take part in a modeling competition. He ended up winning first place and went on to work the catwalks in New York, Milan and Paris. Kutcher made his name playing dumb pretty-boy roles on the TV series "That '70s Show" and in movies like "Dude, Where's My Car?" But as any of the nearly 10.7 million Twitter followers of (at)aplusk can attest, he's got more substantive matters on his mind. Now he's replaced Charlie Sheen on the unfathomably popular "Two and a Half Men" and he's about to play the late Apple founder Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic.

Tyrese Gibson: He grew up in South Central Los Angeles but burst onto the pop-culture scene as a teenager singing "Always Coca-Cola" in a 1994 commercial. Soon afterward, Tommy Hilfiger himself picked the gorgeous Gibson to be the face of his brand; he's also modeled for Guess? jeans. Gibson is actually a model-turned-singer-turned-actor, having released several R&B albums. After making his acting debut in John Singleton's "Baby Boy," he found himself with recurring roles in a couple of heavy-duty franchises: all three "Transformers" films and a couple of the "Fast and the Furious" movies. In "2 Fast 2 Furious," he had the daunting task of replacing Vin Diesel as Paul Walker's sidekick and he oozed charisma from every pore of his flawlessly sculpted physique.

Kim Basinger: She was a Breck Girl — that alone qualifies her for this list. A former Georgia pageant queen, she signed a contract with the Ford modeling agency and appeared on several magazine covers in the '70s. Since then she's been ... well, she's been Kim Basinger: blonde, beautiful, glamorous. She's been a Bond girl (in "Never Say Never Again") and had the contents of a refrigerator poured all over her (in "9 1/2 Weeks"). She's played the Caped Crusader's girlfriend (in the 1989 "Batman") and Eminem's mom (in "8 Mile"). And in 1998, she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the quintessential hooker with a heart of gold in "L.A. Confidential," beating out then-87-year-old Gloria Stuart, who was considered the favorite for "Titanic."

Making the cut
The Australian
AFTER Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, I was left wondering why more young designers don't seek experience overseas rather than prematurely rushing into creating their own labels. That's why it's so satisfying to hear about Christopher Moro. On Friday Nicholas Huxley, proud head of the Fashion Design Studio at TAFE NSW, announced that his former student Moro had found work at Versace. Moro graduated from Huxley's course in 2008 and went on to gain experience with Dion Lee before heading to Paris to study further.

After completing his masters degree at the Institut Francais de la Mode, Moro has worked as an intern with Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga.

After meeting Donatella Versace, Moro is moving to Italy to take on a coveted design job with Versace.

Out of the bag

The Australian

AMONG the emerging designers, ego exercises and too-close homages at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, one brand made a self-assured runway debut with a modest and polished presentation. After more than 70 years in the business of selling handbags, Oroton celebrated moving into ready-to-wear by sending tote and satchel-wielding models towards a sea of photographers.

With 60 stores, Oroton is a serious player in the Australian fashion business, but its approach to ready-to-wear and the runway was very relaxed.

"It wasn't a strategy where I sat down with the board and discussed investing into ready-to-wear," creative director Ana Maria Escobar says.

"It started because I needed a layer of something soft in the stores. I needed something to soften the look. I was getting tired of seeing rows and rows of handbags. We needed something to accessorise the accessories and that was clothes. It wasn't about a $5 million gap in the market."

Gear up for 90-plus days of beaches, balmy weather and barbecue with style and beauty essentials that are both fashionable and functional. Here are seven necessities for spending the season in style.

1 Whimsical prints: Don't just daydream about fields of poppies, bundles of wildflowers or beds of coral -- wear them. These snapshots of summer appear on dresses, skirts, shorts and blouses. Be creative with mixing subtle ones, or keep it simple by sticking to one pattern per ensemble.

2 A pucker that pops: Take a vacation from the usual pale pinks and crimson lip colors with vibrant, fruity ones (think yummy orange, grape, strawberry and cherry tones). These not-your-everyday shades glossed many models' lips on runways at New York Fashion Week, meaning your smile will not only be flirty and fun, but also on trend.

3 A seasonal scent: Indulge your senses with wafts of magnolia blossoms, jasmine and roses wherever you go with a perfume that marries the aromas of these and other summer fragrances. Just a few spritzes or dabs are all it takes to make a chilly May morning smell like a humid August evening.

4 Eye-catching wedges: Give sandals permission to make a statement. Chunky heels have become canvases for tribal prints, zig-zags, florals and a slew of other geometric shapes sure to make what's on your feet the envy of other fashion fans at the beach.

5 A practical swimsuit: Swimsuits are often worn for more than swimming. Entertaining guests, chasing children, searching for seashells, cleaning the patio and visiting a water park are some other reasons to slip into one, making comfort and coverage key. Try a tankini (two-piece suit with a tank-length top and bikini briefs or boy shorts) or a stylish one-piece (yes, those do exist) with skirted bottom or gathered fabric across the torso -- lifesavers for creating the look of a more slender silhouette.

6 A color-shocker: Rival the sunset with apparel in bold brights. Tangerine, hot pink, sunny buttercup and neons are a few worth incorporating into a wardrobe's color palette for the warm months ahead. Heat up the shock value by combining solids in varying shades, such as yellow and plum or pink and orange. For those hesitant about donning too many hues, balance brights with something neutral, such as a nude pump or a khaki pencil skirt.

7 Tinted moisturizer with SPF: Sunbathe safely with a cream that soothes skin while protecting against UVA and UVB rays. To avoid adding something extra to a repertoire of cosmetics, find one with some color that can double as a foundation.

High Performance | K8 Hardy's 'Untitled Runway Show'

New York Times (blog)

This past weekend, as part of the Whitney Biennial, the artist K8 Hardy presented “Untitled Runway Show, 2012,” which was exactly as it sounds, a full-scale live runway show in the museum’s fourth-floor gallery.

The hairstylist Duffy created the swooping, spray-painted hair landscapes, James Kaliardos provided the off-register, overly tan makeup, and Hardy herself designed the collection, a combination of found pieces (or ready-mades in the tradition of Duchamp) like a pair of wide-leg jeans and a shrunken T-shirt, and ornate get-ups that could justifiably be called sculptures, like a dress constructed out of multiple padded bras.

“I want people to think of the entire runway show as a work of art,” Hardy says. “It’s not a fake runway show and it’s not a chance for me to make clothes.” Hardy, who has worked as a stylist and published a fashion zine, FashionFashion, chose her medium this time around as a form of mimicry — by which she means a copy that is not a copy. “It’s a calling out,” she says. “I never cared to have a show just to share my sense of style to the world. I don’t think I would even wear anything in the show. I used every platform having a show gave me to interrupt its normal and largely unquestioned flow.”

Getting the hang of lingerie in New York

Sunday Times.lk

Cheynelle Mendis is described as "a pixie of a designer in a strappy yellow dress and sandals" and she is all smiles as she talks about her life living the dream in New York City. As a designer for MAS Design Inc New York, she lives and commutes to work from Manhattan, enough to make any girl green with envy.

Fashion design was not something Cheynelle stumbled upon. From a small age, she knew what she wanted to be. Her grandmother Barbara, a dressmaker, was her inspiration.

Born in Dubai, Cheynelle and her family moved back to Sri Lanka when she was four years old and from then on she lived in the bosom of her family, most often with her grandmother. “I used to watch her design and sew and eventually when I got a little older, I would help her. Growing up in that environment, you could say it was no surprise to anyone when I decided to become a fashion designer,” she says with a laugh.

She schooled at Alethea International, and found it to be a great place to nurture her talent. For her A Levels she chose her subjects with purpose. Chemistry, for a more in-depth knowledge on textiles and dying chemicals (“You’d be surprised how useful that turned out to be,” she adds), Business Studies for obvious reasons, and Computer Science-“For no real reason at all!” she grins.

First-Ever Timex® Watch Dress Creates "Moment in Time" on Red Carpet

MarketWatch (press release)

"As a designer, I'm always looking for new materials that I can use in unexpected ways. Using Timex watches in my design has been invigorating," says Mr. Siriano. "I am thrilled to have partnered with such an iconic brand - I never thought I would be designing a dress for Christina Ricci made of working Timex watches - it's genuinely a red carpet 'moment in time.'"

Inspired by the Timex brand's wide range of fashionable and stylish collections, the talented trio worked together to create a dress that fit Ms. Ricci's elegant, yet edgy, style. In fact, they were given more than 1,000 watches to help craft their vision.

Timex fashion watch styles grace the pages of Vogue, ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle and The New York Times Sunday Style, as well as fashion blogs such as What I Wore and My Style Pill. Since Timex offers such a large, on trend selection - from leather strapped oversized watches to delicately jewel-toned oval faced timepieces to links in black, gold and brushed metal - the choices were endless, making it challenging to narrow down which to use.

And the terms for those events, despite being on public property, are not easy to come by. But, for a sense of the money: according to Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates, Fashion Week alone will pay $17.2 million over five years to use the park.
'Anna Wintour better watch out', the locals are getting restless! Since the last Fashion Week came to a close neighbors near Lincoln Center have been quite vocal about their displeasure with the way the semiannual event treats Damrosch Park, the space behind Lincoln Center where FW moved after leaving Bryant Park in 2010. Yesterday they upped the ante. DNAinfo reports that last night Community Board 7 voted 33-4 to "push Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Parks Department to find a new permanent site for Fashion Week and to consult the board on any future agreements with Lincoln Center about its use."

The core of the neighbor's issue is the way the park appears during the all-to-brief times when the Fashion Week tents and other events aren't up, which, according to CB7 member Elizabeth Starkey "looks like after a bomb hit." Making matters worse is the fact that the 56 trees in the park which the Parks Department tore down in 2010 are still gone, making it an unpleasant place if you want a bit of shade.

Of course, the Community Board's vote doesn't really have much weight here, but pressure never hurt anyone. The 2.44-acre green space was leased to Lincoln Center in 2010 under a 10-year contract which allows them to sublease it for private events. And the terms for those events, despite being on public property, are not easy to come by. But, for a sense of the money: according to Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates, Fashion Week alone will pay $17.2 million over five years to use the park.

Considering the fact that Fashion Week alone is estimated to bring in $865 million in economic activity a year, we highly doubt it'll be going anywhere anytime soon. But at least neighbors are letting their feelings be known and letting some steam out?

The mayors office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Community Board's resolution.

Leighton Meester: Pretty Baby

Philippine Star

With a fleeting a conversation with Ricky Lo of the Phillipine Star, Leighton flew in from last week of May (the 25th) in time for the Penshoppe's Philippine Fashion Week event the next day and left barely 48 hours later as quietly as she came. Conversations did a free-wheeling one-on-one with her at the presidential suite of Manila Peninsula where she, like Ian the week before, was billeted.

Asked how she felt about her first visit to the Philippines, Leighton smiled, hardly showing any signs of jetlag even after a long haul from the US, “I’ve been looking forward to this visit. My best friend is a Filipino. She and her mom have been telling me interesting things about the Philippines. It’s hot here but I like the weather.”

Fashion BID seeks a new label for itself

A changing district wants distance from its garmento past.

The NY Fashion District Landmark - Photo by: Buck Ennis

The Fashion Center Business Improvement District has worn its name proudly for nearly two decades. Yet come 2013, a wardrobe change of sorts will take place. As designers exit the garment center, replaced by new tenants including hoteliers and visual arts firms, the BID has decided that it's time for a new name, symbolically signaling an end to the era of buttons, needles and thread.

The BID, which was formed as a management association in 1993, recently started the process of rebranding itself, playing up strengths like its midtown location and proximity to three transportation hubs in order to attract fresh office tenants and more vibrant retailers. The reinvention will include a new name and marketing strategy.

Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost

of Cheap Fashion - by Elizabeth L Cline

Dressed to destroy: A skeptical look at cheap fashion

Los Angeles Times

Elizabeth L. Cline goes for the jugular straight away in this exploration of the consumer love affair with cheap clothing.

"Fashion," she writes, "largely deserves its bad reputation. It's now a powerful, trillion-dollar global industry that has too much influence over our pocketbooks, self-image and storage spaces. It behaves with embarrassingly little regard for the environment or human rights."

In her new book, "Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion," Cline begins with a mea culpa. A New York journalist, she reveals that she too was once one of those naughty consumers who snapped up multiple pairs of badly made $7 shoes because they were cheap.

LET'S TALK ABOUT Miami...

Getting a Little TAudrey

by Katherine McPherson

Since its inception in 2009, the Miami-based jewelry line TAudrey (pronounced taud-rey), has been adorning the necks, wrists and hands of fashionistas in the know. Inspired by the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, staring the impossibly chic Audrey Hepburn, TAudrey founder Tiffany Ortiz made the iconic style maven the namesake of her line because, as she puts it, “The TAudrey woman commits only to one thing: dressing to the 'T' in every occasion."

Ortiz’s vision for TAudrey is jewelry that makes a statement. She creates pieces for busy woman who still make time to look their best. “I am inspired by career woman and women on the go, who make it a point to still look pulled together even if they only had five minutes to get ready,” she says. “I wanted my line to be a woman’s go-to accessories where you can just throw on a few pieces and [they] instantly complete an outfit.” She also makes sure her jewelry is comfortable to wear. “All my pieces are lightweight. You can wear them for hours and not feel uncomfortable.”

What drew Ortiz to jewelry was a love for accessories and layering. “In Miami, you have to get creative with layering. It’s usually too hot to layer with clothing, so you have to play with accessories.” Says Ortiz.

“I’ve also always been a really hands-on person and loved metals and creating things by hand.” She primarily works with gold fill because it carries a higher percentage of the metal, upkeeps very well and helps with keeping price-points moderate, which was important to Ortiz. She also plays with a lot of mother of pearl, an ode to her Audrey Hepburn inspirations.

Designer Maria Cornejo on Her New Show With Artist Alice Waese ...

Hollywood Reporter

Zero Maria Cornejo is one line of clothes out of New York that is an insiders' fashion brand, and her New York fashion week runway shows always prove that, as they are attended by editors at the highest levels of the fashion business. Her clothes are always comfortable and chic, go from day to night with a quick change of shoes or jewelry and have an avant-garde city cool-girl edge that's sophisticated without hitting that "arty" line too hard. In other words, they're rather perfect. Her pants, sweaters and leather jackets have amazing fit and and a little twis,- and her dresses achieve the impossible trifecta: They're sexy and comfortable and interesting. All this, and her prices are much better than most designer clothes, but the quality doesn't suffer. No wonder smart women love her.

Designer Maria Cornejo to Hold L.A. Event This Week

Cornejo has a longtime small West Village boutique at Greenwich and Jane, but her eponymous Melrose Place space is many times the size and has the airy feeling of an art gallery. That's why she decided to host a small art gathering for her friend, former employee and present artist Alice Waese, from New York City, who creates art out of metal, silver and paper. Cornejo doesn't get to L.A. often as she's busy creating nine collections a year (two for men, the rest for women, but then there's shoes, handbags, belts and knitwear), but when she did recently, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with her to pick her considerable brain.

A Changing of the Guard

New York Times

ROMAIN BRAU, a founder of the avant-garde-and-beyond Antwerp store RA, where the most mainstream designer on the menu may be the Belgian conceptualist Walter Van Beirendonck, depends on creativity and young talent to lure the most curious of shoppers. London is often the place where he finds them.

“London is the best,” Mr. Brau said. “They have the structure and the sponsors to push those kids up.”
During a four-day fashion event that ended here on Sunday, dedicated for the first time to the city’s men’s wear designers, it was hard to miss Mr. Brau, a tall, slender, shaggy man wearing a chubby teal knit fur jacket over a sheer, bead-trimmed tunic and white long johns, which were tucked into his boots. On his head loomed a large bird, a tiara made of glittering sprays of peacock feathers, which he had to hold down to keep it from fluttering away in the breeze as he walked.

Eccentricity is common in fashion. And London, with its prestigious design schools and reputation for producing figures of enormous creativity like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, embraces individuality more than other fashion capitals.

So it was somewhat of a surprise that many of the young designers showing here this week offered a vision that was, to say the least, conventionally safe, either rooted in strict tailoring or the animated prints and neon sportswear of the 1980s. Rather than a rebellion, they gave us shorts, and quite a few varieties of them.

A little rebellion would have been welcome, though it goes to show just how much London has changed from the days of Ms. Westwood’s incendiary, royalty-snubbing collaborations with Malcolm McLaren, under the Sex label, that she was among the designers who attended an opening reception last week at St. James’s Palace, hobnobbing with Prince Charles himself.

“Somebody suggested I might even be an icon of fashion,” the prince said at the party. “It’s taken me 64 bleeding years.”

Death of young Philadelphia model Vanessa Watson exposes pervasiveness of domestic violence

Vanessa Watson was slain by her boyfriend, who then killed himself, in January.

AT ONLY AROUND 5 feet 6 inches tall, Vanessa Watson wasn't standard model height, but she once boasted that she walked as if she were 6 feet tall.

Strikingly attractive with a chameleonlike appeal, Watson managed to get work at Philly Fashion Week, on BET's "Rip the Runway," and for the Nelli Millard's show at New York's Fashion Week. And if Watson was still far from supermodel status, "Ms. Banks DoDat" — as she was called on Facebook and Twitter — was, as they say, on the come up.

"DoDat" was a reference to her go-getter ways. At 26, Watson, whose professional name was Vanessa Banks, had earned enough to purchase a three-story, five-bedroom, two-bathroom home in North Philly near Broad and Erie. Family was important to her, so — along with her own three kids — she moved in her younger sister and family. She also let her boyfriend, Louis McCrae, move in.

Supermodel speaks out against coal, support new regulations

FuelFix (blog)

Supermodel Elle Macpherson is speaking out against a proposed bill that would cripple recently released mercury and air toxics standards.

In a guest column on CNN.com, the model, who has also done work with the Sierra Club, said it is unacceptable that “these landmark protections are under attack in Congress.”

“It has taken decades to finally get clean-air protections from mercury in place,” she wrote. “We can’t let Congress overturn them.”

The Senate is set to vote today on a resolution by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., that would kill new Environmental protection Agency rules aimed at curbing emissions of mercury and other air toxins from coal-fired power plants.

Inhofe said the new regulations would kill jobs and threaten the reliability of the power grid.

Macpherson, however, disagrees with those assertions.

The mother of two said the regulations are necessary to protect children and the general public from toxic chemicals that officials have said can impair child development and cause asthma attacks.

“Congress has the opportunity to be a part of the solution,” she wrote. “It can protect our children’s health and our air and water. There’s no more important job than that.”

Republicans and industry officials have vigorously fought the mercury emission rules and proposed cross-state air pollution rules, claiming the two regulations could threaten the reliability of the power grid and cause companies to cut jobs.

Several companies, including Dallas-based Luminant, have threatened to shutdown or idle coal-fired plants because of the upcoming regulations.

Full Figured Fashion Week sets standard for industry

Examiner.com

New York's annual Full Figured Fashion Week, a four-day fashion extravaganza, just completed another successful year. Thanks to an inspiring woman named Gwen DeVoe this fashion event has become one of the most highly anticipated weeks of the year.

The events have raised the bar and set the standards for plus-size fashions. The fashion industry has come a long way from flaunting waif-like clothing on waif-like models strutting runways for years. When more than half of the population of women proudly wears size 12 and up, they will happily spend their hard earned money on clothing that fits their beautiful curves as well as brings out their inner diva.

The week featured activities such as sunset cruises, showcases, shopping events, panel discussions, parties and the most highly anticipated – the runway show. The week not only focuses on the hottest plus-size fashions this year, but also allows retailers, boutique owners and entrepreneurs who are considering starting and operating a business in the industry, a chance to combine their resources and talents in a high energy environment that rivals other Fashion Weeks. Capping off the week, the 2012 FFFWeek Industry Awards Show honored and supported the industry’s leaders

She was born in a tiny South African province and recently climbed all the way to the top of the fashion world. Her modeling career is a story of many successes and her sweet looks and figure make us want to see more from this bombshell. Candice Swanepoel is our Model of the Week.

At fifteen, South African beauty Candice Swanepoel, was scouted while shopping in a local flea market. Little did she know that this shopping spree back in 2003 would change Swanepoel’s ordinary life into a rollercoaster of catwalks, fashion magazine covers, ad campaigns and a lot of attention from the fashion industry.

One year later, sixteen year old Swanepoel was earning approximately 5,000 Euros for a day’s work. Nowadays, she has become one of the world’s most successful models and was recently ranked in 10th place on Forbes’ list of highest paid models in the world, with earnings of about 3.1 million dollars.

Rocking the Runway

Candice Swanepoel’s debut was at the 2006 Tommy Hilfiger Spring Fashion Show in New York. That same season she walked for Dolce & Gabbana during Milan Fashion Week. Swanepoel left a lasting impression and during the Fall of 2006, she walked for some of the best brands such as Betsey Johnson, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Heatherette and more.

Spring of 2007 was a great season for Swanepoel once again. She walked for Diane von Furstenberg, Trace Reese, Rock & Republic and Nanette Lepore during New York Fashion Week

Dakar: 'Capital of Franco-African fashion'

CNN

It may not have the allure of Paris or New York but Dakar in Senegal is quickly making a name for itself as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion stakes.

The 10th annual Dakar Fashion Week wrapped on Sunday, attracting an international audience to its showcase of African collections.

A decade after Senegalese designer Adama Ndiaye launched the first show, Dakar has now earned itself the unique title of being the capital of Franco-African fashion.

It's an important milestone for a country few would associate with high-end fashion.

Arise Magazine Fashion Week 2012 comes toAfrica's Victorian ladies

Fashion analyst Helen Jennings says this year's event, attended by the "godfather of African fashion" Alphadi, cemented Dakar's reputation.

Jennings, the editor of Arise, a London-based African fashion magazine, pointed to the important differences between English and French-inspired fashion on the continent.

"Anglophone Africa is much more westernized on the whole and therefore gets more international attention. While Francophone designers, although still very contemporary, do veer toward more traditional styles, especially the Senegalese boubou and north African kaftan.

"It made for a refreshing change to see these influences on the catwalk."

However, she added that Dakar was by no means the capital of African fashion: "Without a doubt those capitals are Nigeria (host of Arise Magazine Fashion week) and South Africa (which runs Africa Fashion Week)."

Watch: African street fashion

The African fashion industry's growth in recent years is part of a wider economic boom on the continent, says Jennings.

Review of New York's Full Figured Fashion Week 2012

Examiner.com

Full Figured Fashion Week is slightly similar to other fashion week events , but it is larger-literally. All of the events hosted by Sonsi Full Figured Fashion Week catered to plus-size women. Fashion sponsors such as Pretty Pear Bride who provided a sneak peek into designer plus-size bridal gowns, MYNT1792, who provided plus-size casual and formal wear, and well known outlets such as Lane Bryant and Ashley Stewart gave a glimpse of both casual wear and swimwear.

This plus-size gala consisted of an all white boat party, mini fashion show at Bloomingdale's, Indy Fashion Show that featured upcoming designers such as Texas native Savannah Red, a networking event, two after parties, and a shopping spree event for guest to shop from fashion type vendors and of course the fashion show and other private events that were by invitation only. All of the events I attended were fun and exciting and never held a dull moment.

Fashion in a time of hardline Islam

New York Daily News

The Sahel's most feted fashionista, Tuareg designer Alphadi, hit the runway at Dakar Fashion Week with a homage to Mali, whose vast north is largely under under control of hardline Islamists.
under control of hardline Islamists.

The bright colours, occasionally bare arms and sparkle that sashayed down the catwalk were definitely not in keeping with sharia, the strict Islamic law that has been enforced in northern Mali for the past two months.

"That's the idea," laughed the man who was introduced to the crowd at the final show of the 10th annual Dakar Fashion Week on Saturday night as the "Magician of the Desert".

Alphadi was born in the fabled city of Timbuktu, an ancient trading hub, intellectual centre and popular metaphor for a mythical faraway place.

But since jihadists exploited a political vacuum following a coup d'etat and planted their ominous black flags in the town in late March, tens of thousands have fled and those that remain have to follow strict Islamic law.

Women have to wear veils and are not permitted to wear trousers, smokers are flogged and cigarettes and alcohol destroyed.

"It shocks me," Alphadi said in an interview with AFP on Sunday.

"Timbuktu has always been a secular town, everyone living together, sharing, blacks and whites, very cosmopolitan. A mysterious town!"

New York fashion show features Cordillera warrior art

GMA News

Feathered headgear, eye tattoo and lines that define. Young designer Anna Puruganan showcased these details and more in a collection inspired by the indigenous art and traditions of the Cordillera tribes. The fashion show held on June 21 at the Philippine Center on Fifth Avenue presented a collection of style she described as “a lost art.”
“I want us to remember that this was the original Filipino style before we became a colony. This was our culture, the kind of art that has been lost now and I don’t want to forget that,” Anna told The FilAm. Born in Brazil and raised in Canada, Anna studied fashion design at La Salle’s Benilde College in Manila. Story is that she met this indigenous band, Kadangyan, who told her about their story.

The band’s music “Kaluluwa” played in the background, a perfect rhythm for Anna’s themed parade of clothing using fabrics made of pina, silk, hablon and abaca.
“Long time ago, the Cordillera tribe was considered warriors and headhunters,” explained Anna, the daughter of a diplomat. Her mother, Merl, heads the Dual Citizenship department of the Philippine consulate. The tattoos used on the models were very significant to the tribe, she said. “The tattoo was a symbol of their preparation going to the war,” she said. “I really thought it was beautiful. ”She explained further her use of the red-gold-and-white color scheme. The white pina and silk is a tribute to the Cordillera women dressing partly naked. The touches of red symbolize the “blood that was shed and how many heads were taken.” The metallic accents depict women preparing for battle.

“For a really young designer who is starting in the business, she already knows what she wants and who she is,” said fellow designer Izza Dungca.

“She’s glamrock and edgy. It’s a very modern take and I love her idea of Filipiniana not being the conservative and the costume-y that we see or that we’re used to seeing.”
One of the models, Irene Abaya-Campos, said Anna’s collection brings out the “modern side of tribal.”
The show’s director, Erno Hormillosa, said Anna’s style is modern and very edgy and “creates a good metamorphosis of our culture.” - The FilAm

Big Fashion Weekend For Gaborone in August

The Bostwana Gazette

It’s official; Botswana first international fashion show is back again and this time it’s every bit bigger and more fabulous.
Last year, international Motswana designer Koketso Chiepe hosted Gaborone Fashion Night, an event that can claim to be the country’s first international fashion show featuring the designs of Koketso herself, winner of Vivica Fox’s Glam God,IndashioBatory and top local designers Mpho Kuaho and Botho Chalebgwa among others.

Fashion Night was also graced by Hollywood actress Yaya Dacosta and supermodel Sessilee Lopez. Fronting the event as the official face was New York based Motswana model Kaone Kario.

The event set the standard for future fashion shows in Botswana and garnered massive international buzz for the country’s fledgling fashion industry through twitter and even saw one of Mpho Kuaho outfits hit the international red carpet courtesy of YayaDacosta as seen in Essence Magazine.

Recounting last year’s event Chiepe revealed,” According to everybody it went really well.I knew what was going on behind the scenes, but I didn’t even see half of what was going on in the front (laughs)! But it was the pictures afterwards that revealed everything to me because it was just so crazy leading up to the show. My International guests were also so impressed. It was my first ever attempt at creating an event. Seeing everything come together and everybody just coming back with really good reviews, felt like it was a success at the end of the day, we pulled it off.”

Volunteers raise money with fashion show

Asbury Park Press

Two years after a bitter fight over the NY/NJ Baykeeper oyster restoration project .... The event, a fashion show called Women of Distinction, benefited Caregivers Volunteers of Central New Jersey and was held at the Clarion Hotel.

The fashion show models were members of the community and many of them were volunteers for the organization as well, said Lynette Whiteman, executive director of the organization.

Organizers could not say Wednesday how much they raised, though the event collected about $12,000 last year.

Those funds help caregivers provide support for local seniors who need their assistance. Volunteers drive people to medical appointments such as doctor visits, lab work and physical therapy.

“They pick them up take them there and take them home,” Whiteman said.

When seniors have medical or vision problems “everyone is bothering them to ‘give up your car keys’,” Whiteman said. “But this is not New York, we don’t have public transportation.”

That is where caregivers comes in and helps out. They do grocery shopping and will come and stay with a person who has dementia while the home caregiver gets some respite, Whiteman said.

Pop-Up Pretty! NYC Partners with Local Retailer for Fashion Tech STORY Store

Betabeat

Pop-ups are ever popping up about the city like so many mushrooms after a rainstorm, so it was only a matter of time before we saw one just for fashion startups. The New York City Economic Development Corporation has just announced that it’ll be collaborating with retailer Story on a competition dubbed Project Pop-Up NYC. It’s targeted to both up-and-coming retailers and (more importantly for our purposes) innovative fashion tech startups.

Up to three winners will get their very own pop-up within STORY’s Chelsea outpost during the month of September, which of course coincides nicely with Fashion Week. They’ll also win PR support, mentoring and “exposure at key industry events.” That last bit sounds a bit fuzzy, but the right mentor is a pearl beyond price. As many as eight other companies will also get display space.

Judges include Bonobos CEO Andy Dunn, High Line Venture Partners’ Shana Fisher, and Lucky editor-in-chief Brandon Holly.

The criteria:

Being an existing fashion retailer and/or fashion-related technology company; able to support a pop-up store with saleable merchandise (retailers) or a demo/showcase (fashion technology companies) during the month of September; be based in New York City; have been in business for at least one year; and have annual sales or sales projections of over $25,000.

During her fashion week season debut, she walked for 9 top designers and brands. Her unique look and strong appearance on stage earned her the 3rd spot on FashionTV’s Spring 2012 First Face countdown. She’s also known for playing guitar for model pals backstage before a show.

She’s been recognized as a rising star and today, she’s one of the most familiar faces on the catwalk. Julia Nobis is our Model of the Week.

Nobis’s first time on an international catwalk was during Calvin Klein Fall 2010 in New York. She walked exclusively for the American fashion house. But this was just the beginning of a wonderful fashion experience for the Aussie transplant.

The next step on Nobis’s modeling career was during the same season, but this time on the runways of London Fashion Week. The young model got to open the fall Topshop show in London, and also closed the Richard Nicoll show.

Beyonce Buys Jigga A Jet For Being A Good Papa!

Bey just keeps on giving! After penning a open letter to one of her all-time favorite performers, Michael Jackson, Beyonce also released two personal photos on her website IAm.Beyonce.com. It was also revealed that Bey dropped stacks on stacks on stacks of paper on a new plane for her hubby, Jigga-Who!

Keeping their relationship spiced up, the House of Dereon designer reportedly bought her hubby a plane for Father's Day! According to Pop Crush:

“The Bombardier Challenger 850 has a flash interior including a cream leather living room, a kitchen, a bedroom and two bathroom,” reveals a source. “Beyonce thought this would be the perfect way to show Jay how much of a great dad he is.”

Spending the last few months touring overseas with husband Jay-Z, last night Queen B posted a photo of her standing closely by her man's side. Although it's an epic picture, it doesn't seem to be a live shot, as there's a computer mouse icon dead in the center of the couple's legs!

The second photo brings out the gangster side of the 30-year-old Houston, Texas native. Covering half of her face with a cloth in her b-boy stance, it appears Bey had herself a little fun while eating dinner. In the black and white pic, she uses the table's utensil napkin to put on the persona. We wonder if Jay was behind the camera, snapping the shot?

June 28, 2012, (Sawfnews.com) - Blake Lively made us drool wearing a plunging yellow back baring Gucci gown at the New York premiere of Savages at the School of Visual Arts Theater in NYC on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.

The 24-year-old actress was recently announced the face of Gucci Première women's fragrance; understandably she was promoting the designer brand whole chestedly heartedly.

The buttercup-yellow halter gown, made of pleated silk Georgette fabric, was one of a kind made specially for her. It featured a plunging V-neckline, cinched sash waist and a floor grazing full skirt.

She accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels consisting of turquoise statement earrings and bangles, with one of them an exact match to the earrings.

Her neatly swept back hair was styled in a thick over-the-shoulder tousled fishtail braid. She adorned it with a shimmering oxidized silver hair-tie at its base and wrapped her own hair around the elastic tie at the bottom.

She kept her makeup light, letting her enviable decolletage and dewy skin take center stage.

She completed her look with glossy pink lips, black liner on top lashlines and mascara coated eyelashes.

This is Lively's second dazzling look in a row and within a week; she was earlier seen in a Zuhair Murad dress and sexy retro waves at the LA premiere of Savages.

Rock N Fashion show to highlight local talent

Lincoln Journal Star

Orion Walsh will be performing Saturday night at the Rococo Theatre. But it won’t be an ordinary show for the Lincoln singer-songwriter -- fashion models usually don’t do their thing while he’s playing local clubs or around the country.

That’s because Walsh’s set will be part of The Rock N Fashion Show, a combination of music and fashion that returns to Lincoln after a three-year absence.

Produced by Lincoln native Joshua Ferdinand, who now lives in Kansas City where he does similar events throughout the year, the show fuses live local music, designers, boutiques and models.

Walsh played a similar Lincoln show in 2009 and is happy to be back on the Saturday’s bill.

“It’s pretty cool,” Walsh said. “It’s something definitely different. The band plays and models show local designer clothes at the same time. Three years ago, I thought it would be kind of weird. But it’s pretty fun. It is weird stagewise, because most of the attention is on them (the models). But it’s fun.”

Walsh will provide one of three sets of music Saturday. The others will come from FREAKABOUT and Slick Fiction.

While they perform, models will present fashions from three Lincoln boutiques and three Lincoln designers. They are Tsuru, Stella, Kaity Rathman Design, Be Yourself, Donna Faye Couture and Just Because by Kate Walz. Keeping the entire event local, Hair and makeup will be headed up by Illusions Hair Salon. Chad Sibler of KOLN/KGIN-TV will serve as the show’s master of ceremonies.

“The show has grown in scope and energy for five years running, and it continues to impress audiences by drawing on local talent that would compete head to head with the best of NYC or Los Angeles,” Ferdinand said in a news release.

Three years ago, Somasphere worked up a special set for the fashion show. Walsh isn’t doing that. But he’ll be there with his band rather than playing solo, and he has added horn parts to some songs to keep

The Czarinas Are Back

New York Times

By ERIC WILSON. Published: June 29, 2012. OUTSIDE the Ritz Paris on the Place Vendôme, where paparazzi congregate whenever celebrities are in town for Fashion Week, a striking alabaster-skinned woman posed on her way into the hotel one morning in March.
She wore navy silk pajamas with white piping, a teal topcoat draped over her shoulders, oversize cat-eye sunglasses and a loosely tied babushka over her hair, giving her the mysterious, nearly plastic, impression of a 1950s Hollywood movie star. Hours later, she emerged in a pale blue halter dress covered with spots, and posed once again. The next morning, it was a Chanel suit in black tweed and a matching beret, worn askew.

Her name is Ulyana Sergeenko, and though she is not yet internationally famous, she is certainly well known among the fashion designers of this particular part of the world. She is one of their best customers, the wife of a Russian insurance billionaire, a former model, a star of street-style photographers and a burgeoning designer and photographer herself.

Suzanne Perron-Top Female Achiever

My New Orleans

For many fashion designers, moving to New York City and designing for some of the biggest names in the industry is an almost unattainable dream; for Suzanne Perron, it was a not only a reality, but a stepping stone to a career that transported her from the runways of New York Fashion Week to her own design studio off Magazine Street.

“I started sewing as a young child and wanted to be a fashion designer since I was 5,” Perron says. “I fell in love with fashion back when fashion was about exceptional artistry, construction and vision. I would marvel at the works of Vionet, Dior and Valentino, to name a few.”

Her passion for the creativity of the fashion industry led Perron to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City after graduating from Louisiana State University in 1991.

Kerr: Orlando Bloom makes me nervous during fashion shows

New York Daily News

She walked the runways of Paris just two months after giving birth to baby Flynn, but one audience still has the power to make Miranda Kerr nervous - her husband, actor Orlando Bloom.

"I never really want Orlando to be there [in the audience of a show] because it makes me nervous," the 29-year-old Victoria's Secret model told the August issue of Harper's Bazaar UK.

"But last year, he was like, 'You have no choice, I'm coming.' And the one time he was attending the show, my shoe decided to fall off."

The stunning beauty, who dons a sexy peek-a-boo bra and red riding blazer on the cover of the issue, revealed that the one thing she is confident of, however, is her talents as a new mom.

Va. Beach teen selected as spokesmodel for fall show

The Virginian-Pilot

It was only two years ago that I observed Shalea Poole, then a lanky Virginia Beach teen, take her beginning steps in a modeling class.

Now the 17-year-old Landstown High senior has been selected as the face of the Lawrence Brothers' Trendsetters 2012 Hair and Fashion Show. Shalea will appear in print campaigns and will be featured during the event, scheduled for Nov. 18 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

It's a significant opportunity for Shalea. The Lawrence Brothers' show, in six years, has become one of the major style events on the East Coast. Attendance shot up from a few hundred at the inaugural event to more than 5,000 last year.

Shalea is signed with Virginia Beach-based Splash Model Management and as such also has modeled in Virginia Fashion Week. Other gigs have included modeling in New York Fashion Week, Fashion Week Swim and fashion shows for "Project Runway" and "Hype Hair" in New York.

Speaking of Splash Model, owner Ann Leister has set this year's Virginia Fashion Week for Oct. 17-21 in Norfolk.
Virginia Fashion Week, in its sixth year, has partnered with nonprofit Fractured Atlas for sponsorship. Fractured Atlas helps support artists and art organizations.

The NEW fashion capital

Vogue Australia

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia puts Sydney on the fashion map. ... around the world. It also cemented Australia's place in the top five international fashion destinations around the world – Milan, New York, London, Paris and now Sydney.

With Mercedes-Benz on board, Australia’s preeminent fashion week is back on the map.

In addition to the world-class sponsor, the event boasted countless drawcards. The city itself is the perfect backdrop for the fashion spectacle – the cordial climate is enough to pull tourists on its own, but the Overseas Passenger Terminal highlights it as if under a microscope. With arguably our country’s most famous landmarks - the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge - both available at a glance, it’s no wonder so many internationals booked in early and stayed on longer. In fact, the calibre of international guests this year shows the proof is in the peplum; Sydney is a fashion, authority in its own right.

Of course, the designers on show weren’t exactly of the novice variety either. In fact, far from being local phenomena, Australian names are now competing on a global scale. With respected industry veteran Jenny Kee showing for the first time in almost two decades, Parisian favourite Collette Dinnigan awarded the 2012 Fashion Laureate and Hollywood go-to Johanna Johnson revealing a 50-piece collection, it’s no exaggeration to say Australian design has worldwide appeal.

And we [with Perez] started recycling fabrics way before it was popular. We use runners, satin bed sheets, old jackets, old jeans. Anything. Whatever is around. Instead of giving it to Goodwill or throwing it in the trash and making more trash, we make new things.”

Vega said that the two evolved into fashion design through making Halloween and Carnival costumes. “We always won first, second or third prize,” said Vega, who was born in New York and grew up in Puerto Rico; Perez is a Venezuela native. “We were always in the top three.”

After a splashy debut during 2008’s Funkshion: Fashion Week Miami Beach, a string of back-to-back fashion shows through 2010 landed the two a list of women clients “…who are going to galas and need a specific piece; something that no one else has.”

At first, she met with resistance.

“There are designers in China?” she recalls hearing.

Ms. Tam, 52 years old, remains New York-based but travels to Asia every two months, and celebrities ranging from Beyoncé to Zhang Ziyi wear her clothes. She plans to expand her business further in China, with a goal of building 200 stores there over the next two years.

With a career built on blending influences, she is known for her collaborative work. In 2010, she designed a butterfly-themed “digital clutch” laptop for Hewlett-Packard, and she has recently branched into clothing for yoga, which she practices herself, with Olympic gymnast Li Ning. Katie Holmes to make Fashion Week debut in New York

Irish Independent

According to WWD, the actress is taking her Holmes & Yang spring collection to the international fashion event.

Launched in 2009 with her design partner Jeanne Yang, the range is stocked at New York department store Barneys and Harvey Nichols in London amongst other luxury stores.

Despite her recent high-profile split from husband Tom Cruise, the former Dawson’s Creek star is pushing ahead with her sartorial plans.

“A spokeswoman for the brand, which launched in 2009 and is available at Barneys New York, said Holmes’ personal matters aren’t affecting the line,” WWD reports.

It is the first time the brand will be shown in a fashion show.

Katie Holmes will join former good friend Victoria Beckham in presenting her garments at the highly anticipated event. The women initially struck up a friendship through their husbands but haven’t been pictured together for years.
“Will Katie (whisper it) rekindle her fashion friendship with a certain Victoria Beckham? Please let it be so!” British magazine Grazia writes. “The once-BFFs will be presenting their lines in the Big Apple at the same time, after all, and as a seasoned pro, [Victoria Beckham] would be the ideal candidate to offer some words of wisdom, right?

"Plus, if their matchy-matchy wardrobes make a comeback - remember the lookalike sunnies, the identikit bobs, the coordinated coats? - Katie's sartorial status would be sealed.”

Jessica’s fashion label has been going from strength to strength and has become one of the most successful celebrity brands ever.

Shortly after giving birth to daughter Maxwell in May this year, the star launched a new maternity range.

By Bibby Sowray

Friday Jul 6 2012

There's nothing more magical than the idea of a fairytale coming to life, especially when Christian Louboutin is involved

The designer has finally unveiled his re-imagination of Cinderella's famous glass slippers to celebrate the re-release of Disney's most-loved animated picture.
"Her character and her story dictated the design to me, it was all there in the pages and the words of this tale," explained the designer. "Cinderella is not only an iconic character when it comes to grace and fairytale love, but also shoes. The dream is a major factor in my language of design. There are no limits in the world of fantasy and there is always a happily ever after."

Vanessa Simmons launches new swimwear line

The Grio

Vanessa Simmons is getting ready to launch her own line of swimwear, Rose by Vanessa Jean. With the Pastry Shoes franchise from she and her sister Angela on firm footing, Vanessa is stepping out to develop this independent project.

In an article on the Black Enterprise web site, Vanessa said about her new collection:

Creating Pastry will always be a special bond that Ang[ela] and I share, it taught me a lot about the business of fashion and I am so excited to use what I’ve learned to start up Rose by Vanessa Jean. It is definitely a lot different designing [swimwear] than sneakers especially because a lot of it is concentrated on a woman’s body and getting the right fit down packed."

The new line will feature pieces suitable for women of all sizes. Backing her on her fashion endeavor is Shark Tank‘s Daymond John, who acts as Vanessa’s partner and brand manager.
No stranger to the fashion world, John was once a fashion trendsetter in the early ’90s when he started up the FUBU brand. The vision behind FUBU, which stood for “For Us By Us,” wasn’t just a clothing brand; it was considered a lifestyle label for African Americans. Perhaps through this partnership, Vanessa and John will be able to recreate the creative energy that made FUBU so iconic

New York's The Cut Takes Aim at Vogue and Jezebel - FishbowlNY

mediabistro.com

New York’s fashion blog The Cut is getting set to expand, and so it is setting its sights high. According to The New York Times, The Cut is set to grow the week of August 13, backed by better coverage of fashion shows and new content overseen by the likes of former Gawker staffer Maureen O’Connor.

The goal? To take on Vogue and Jezebel. Adam Moss, New York’s editor-in-chief, told the Times that The Cut will be ”a high-end fashion magazine with the scrappiness of a blog.”

The Cut’s growth will surely generate more interest from fashion advertisers, who already like New York. The Times reports that fashion advertising rose by 34 percent this year, and beauty product ads increased by a whopping 100 percent.

Self Launching Fashion Site

By Chris O'Shea

Self is getting set to launch a very Pinterest-like site, called Selfcurateyourlook. According to Adweek, the site — which launches in September — is being tabbed as a “virtual trunk show,” where visitors can browse products hand-picked by Self’s staff, which are presented in a catalogue format. If a person likes something, they can save it in their “look book,” share it with others via social media or even click through and purchase it.

As might guess, this site is music to advertisers’ ears. Laura McEwen, vice president and publisher of Self, understands this, though she puts it in a more eloquent way.

“Self’s Virtual Trunk Show enables consumers to curate their own style while aligning with Self’s editorial fashion expertise and our advertisers’ brands,” McEwen told Adweek. “This site will also align Self more closely with our fashion and beauty partners.”

That’s a lot of aligning

Express invites Savannah public to massive fashion show in Monterey Square

Savannah Morning News

In a city defined by fashion, where runway shows come and go as frequently as tourists, it’s hard to imagine one turning heads like a pair of neon hot pants.

But that’s exactly what Savannahians should expect Friday when international fashion retailer Express takes over Monterey Square in the historic district, say company reps and local officials.
“It’s something you won’t see again in Savannah,” promises Jay Self, film services director for the city. “It’ll be like a New York or Milan fashion show.”

That’s exactly the exclusive air organizers are hoping to conjure when they set up their 70-foot runway at Gordon and Bull streets, on the south end of the square, starting this morning — but with a twis>.

They’re inviting the public to crash this party, called Rock the Sidewalk.

“What’s so great about it is that fashion shows from big brands are usually closed door,” said Jennifer Bayley, Express’ senior manager of public relations. “You have to be an editor or Olsen twin to get in.”
The Savannah show, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will be different. Though it will feature a bevy of international talent and the debut of Express’ men’s and women’s holiday lines, Savannahians will be invited to crowd the stage as the models strut their looks.

New York City Movie Theaters Forcing Fashion Statement Against Smaller Sodas on Employees

New York Observer

The passionate opposition of the pro-obesity lobby pro-soda-size-choice lobby has already assaulted Mayor Bloomberg with a ‘Million Gulp March‘ for Big Soda. What’s next? Fashion, for people and drinks of all sizes!

Apparently, some movie theater employees are trading in their regular workwear for a couture statement that speaks out against our city’s dictatorial soda size discrimination.

The shirt is becoming the hottest thing in street style since creepy men with cameras who aren’t Bill Cunningham took over Manhattan, as it’s been spotted outside the most fashionable film houses in New York, too. TEMECULA ---- Temecula Recycling and Promenade Temecula will present fashions made from recycled materials July 7 in a fashion show that will challenge guests' ideas of fashion and explore the artistic side of what fashion is to the individual.

The event will exhibit fashions created from used and recycled materials by students from the Art Department at Mount San Jacinto College and local designers and artists. The recycled wear must be made of at least 50 percent recycled items and will feature creative uses of items such as tin cans, metals, plastics, paper and clothing.

"Temecula Recycling opened my eyes to these amazing creative uses of recycled materials at a fashion event they hosted in April," commented Sher Haddon of Promenade Temecula in a press release. "When we started thinking about what inspires people to create their own signature look, we thought of these young designers and how they creatively used materials to individualize their style and explore their unique design esthetic."
The event will also serve as a springboard to encourage others to participate in the final round of Promenade Temecula's third season of Project Style, a contest where fashion-savvy shoppers compete locally, regionally and nationally for cash prizes and a grand prize trip to New York City and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

and taken by ambulance to a hospital, her publicist and the show's producer said.

Chenoweth's medical condition following the Wednesday afternoon accident in New York was not disclosed by publicist Jill Fritzo or CBS Television Studios. It was not immediately known if she was hospitalized.

According to Fritzo, Chenoweth was hit in the head by scaffolding. In a statement, the studio described the equipment involved differently.

"While filming a scene for 'The Good Wife' in Brooklyn, a gust of wind blew a lighting silk out of place striking actress Kristin Chenoweth," the studio said. Lighting silk is cloth used to soften or deflect artificial light or sunlight during shooting.

The 43-year-old actress was treated on the set by the show's medic, then taken by a New York Fire Department emergency medical team to a hospital, the studio said.

Syracuse high school alum throws a hometown fashion show

Syracuse.com

Bingham High School grad Ke’Sean Lyons has spent the last few years stitching together opportunities and is back home to show what he has achieved to some of the people who helped him achieve it.

They include his mom, his high school fashion technology teacher, staff from On Point for College and from Say Yes to Education, nonprofit organizations that helped Lyons get into college and secure free college tuition.

Lyons, 20, who graduated in 2010, is home on a break from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Saturday he will put on a show with his own money to showcase his designs.

Three other young, former Syracuse school district students will show collections, too. — Adrianna Benton, Me’Lisa Matthews and Bilaya Jackson. Like Lyons, Benton and Jackson were students in the Syracuse school district’s fashion technology classes.

Since May 19, when Lyons got home from school, he designed and sewed 15 outfits for men and women, secured the venue for the show and recruited friends to model. He’s hoping to make enough in ticket sales to cover the $700 or so the venture is costing him.
