The fashion show will take place on a New York-style runway, and feature children from the Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. The hospital is a beneficiary of the "Martin Truex Jr. Special Needs Fund" which raises money for the hospital. On May 16th, Martin Truex Jr. will have his MTJ Motorsports garage, which currently houses his old race cars, transformed into a high fashion venue more suited for the pages of Vogue, than Speedway Illustrated. It is all part of a fundraiser organized by the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation.

VOGUE NEWS:

Vogue moves to limit too-young, too-skinny models from its pages around the world

Washington Post

NEW YORK — Vogue magazine, perhaps the world’s top arbiter of style, is making a statement about its own models: Too young and too thin is no longer in.

They agreed to “not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder,” and said they will ask casting directors to check IDs at photo shoots and fashion shows and for ad campaigns. The move is an important one for the fashion world, said former model Sara Ziff, who was discovered at 14 and has since founded The Model Alliance, dedicated to improving the working conditions of models and persuading the industry to take better care of its young.

Vogue's New Beauty Standard: No Underage Models Or Eating Disorders

Forbes

Marc Jacobs, for example, flouted the guidelines and featured underage girls in his Spring/Summer 2012 presentation at February's New York Fashion Week. “I do the show the way I think it should be, and not the way somebody tells me it should be,” Mr. Jacobs said at the time.
Beginning with the June issue of Vogue, which hits newsstands this month, readers can expect healthier beauties in its pages. The New York Times reported this morning that all 19 international editions of Vogue have adopted a policy that sets a strong precedent in the health and age of its models.

Skeptics question whether Vogue went far enough to promote healthier models
Washington Post

The Council of Fashion Designers of America adopted a voluntary initiative in 2007 emphasizing age minimums and healthy working environments during New York Fashion Week. London Fashion Week designers signed a contract with the British Fashion Council Fashion Council to use models who are at least 16.

Is Vogue vow for underage, eating disorder model ban more hype than health?

Whether faux or real, exotic skins are hot

Indianapolis Star

A model wears a python-embossed jacket from the Elie Tahari Fall 2012 collection during Fashion Week in New York. / John Minchillo / Associated Press Associated Press NEW YORK -- Fashion moves in waves, and in today's easier, unfussy stage, glitz and gold might seem over the top. But boring isn't the only way to do a pared-down look. Exotic skins -- and many more faux exotic skins -- can bridge the gap between too much and not enough.

Choices go from neon-embossed leathers that mimic python and ostrich, to rare and very expensive tree-frog skin. It's mostly accessories, but there are a lot of skin-inspired printed fabrics out there, too.

Ryan Lochte Is the Fourth Man to Ever Cover Vogue

New York Magazine

Ryan Lochte, a six-time Olympic-medal-winning swimmer, becomes the fourth man to ever cover American Vogue for the magazine's June issue, which also features soccer player Hope Solo and tennis champion Serena Williams (both of whom are also Vogue cover first-timers, although Serena and her sister Venus have been featured in the magazine several times). This is the first time a man has ever been on the cover of Vogue without a female model: The previous male cover stars — Richard Gere, George Clooney, and Lebron James — were photographed with Cindy Crawford, Gisele, and Gisele again, respectively. You can see those covers in our slideshow.
So, what does it mean that three athletes — one of them male — are on this month's cover? Anna Wintour's inclination to marry fashion and sports is a canny one, and it's a direction she's been taking for some time now. She frequently attends basketball games and tennis matches in the New York area, but she also invites athletes into the fashion world, hosting them at Vogue events and featuring them in the magazine. Putting three of them on the cover may be a watershed moment, but it's been a long time coming.

Of course, [Anna]Wintour is clearly aware of the overlaps between the sports and fashion worlds. Sure, a lot of fashion fans may not be interested in sports — and vice versa — but the two industries have a lot in common. Their stars become huge celebrities. Both embrace extreme physical ideals, nutty personalities, and showiness. What athletes wear, both in and out of the game, is carefully examined. The way people define themselves by what they wear is not unlike how people define themselves by certain sports teams. Fashion and sports are both utterly frivolous and culturally essential. Both can involve more than a fair amount of spandex, glitter, and sequins.

Calvin Klein's Costa stirring more attention

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Costa has waited — patiently — to make his big splash.

He jumped in as creative director for womenswear at Calvin Klein with both feet when he was handpicked by Klein almost a decade ago, but he's been a behind-the-scenes player, slowly, steadily building up his portfolio and profile while staying true to the house's DNA of minimalist, modern design.

He has scored some big awards, including twice being named best women's designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and winning a national design award from the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Museum. He's also had some memorable red-carpet moments — Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence wore his designs at last year's Oscars and Emily Blunt was dressed in Calvin Klein at the Met Gala last week — just to name a few. Still, he doesn't make a lot of noise, and he doesn't generate the gossipy whisper campaigns that the fashion crowd often eats up.

Lisa Schatz starts her Preakness shopping eight months early, at the September fashion trade shows in New York City. In addition to her regular buys for spring inventory, she's learned to add items featuring bold colors and fun prints that will stand out at Maryland's biggest horse race.

Usually boutique owners purchase clothes for four seasons — five, if you count resorts. But in Baltimore, where Preakness-goers buy duds that sometimes veer from national spring trends, window displays are peppered with color combinations such as yellow and black, bold prints and funky hats that reflect the quirky traditions of the race. Preakness is its own buying season.

Five top models-turned-actors

Seattle Post Intelligencer

BY CHRISTY LEMIRE, AP Movie Critic FILE

Travelation.com/Southwest

Ashton Kutcher: The 6-foot-2 Kutcher dropped out of the University of Iowa, where he'd planned to study biochemical engineering, after an agent recruited him at a bar to take part in a modeling competition. He ended up winning first place and went on to work the catwalks in New York, Milan and Paris. Kutcher made his name playing dumb pretty-boy roles on the TV series "That '70s Show" and in movies like "Dude, Where's My Car?" But as any of the nearly 10.7 million Twitter followers of (at)aplusk can attest, he's got more substantive matters on his mind. Now he's replaced Charlie Sheen on the unfathomably popular "Two and a Half Men" and he's about to play the late Apple founder Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic.

Tyrese Gibson: He grew up in South Central Los Angeles but burst onto the pop-culture scene as a teenager singing "Always Coca-Cola" in a 1994 commercial. Soon afterward, Tommy Hilfiger himself picked the gorgeous Gibson to be the face of his brand; he's also modeled for Guess? jeans. Gibson is actually a model-turned-singer-turned-actor, having released several R&B albums. After making his acting debut in John Singleton's "Baby Boy," he found himself with recurring roles in a couple of heavy-duty franchises: all three "Transformers" films and a couple of the "Fast and the Furious" movies. In "2 Fast 2 Furious," he had the daunting task of replacing Vin Diesel as Paul Walker's sidekick and he oozed charisma from every pore of his flawlessly sculpted physique.

Kim Basinger: She was a Breck Girl — that alone qualifies her for this list. A former Georgia pageant queen, she signed a contract with the Ford modeling agency and appeared on several magazine covers in the '70s. Since then she's been ... well, she's been Kim Basinger: blonde, beautiful, glamorous. She's been a Bond girl (in "Never Say Never Again") and had the contents of a refrigerator poured all over her (in "9 1/2 Weeks"). She's played the Caped Crusader's girlfriend (in the 1989 "Batman") and Eminem's mom (in "8 Mile"). And in 1998, she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the quintessential hooker with a heart of gold in "L.A. Confidential," beating out then-87-year-old Gloria Stuart, who was considered the favorite for "Titanic."

Making the cut
The Australian
AFTER Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, I was left wondering why more young designers don't seek experience overseas rather than prematurely rushing into creating their own labels. That's why it's so satisfying to hear about Christopher Moro. On Friday Nicholas Huxley, proud head of the Fashion Design Studio at TAFE NSW, announced that his former student Moro had found work at Versace. Moro graduated from Huxley's course in 2008 and went on to gain experience with Dion Lee before heading to Paris to study further.

After completing his masters degree at the Institut Francais de la Mode, Moro has worked as an intern with Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga.

After meeting Donatella Versace, Moro is moving to Italy to take on a coveted design job with Versace.

Out of the bag

The Australian

AMONG the emerging designers, ego exercises and too-close homages at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, one brand made a self-assured runway debut with a modest and polished presentation. After more than 70 years in the business of selling handbags, Oroton celebrated moving into ready-to-wear by sending tote and satchel-wielding models towards a sea of photographers.

With 60 stores, Oroton is a serious player in the Australian fashion business, but its approach to ready-to-wear and the runway was very relaxed.

"It wasn't a strategy where I sat down with the board and discussed investing into ready-to-wear," creative director Ana Maria Escobar says.

"It started because I needed a layer of something soft in the stores. I needed something to soften the look. I was getting tired of seeing rows and rows of handbags. We needed something to accessorise the accessories and that was clothes. It wasn't about a $5 million gap in the market."

The Summer 7: Fashion essentials for spending the season in style

By Sara Bauknecht / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Gear up for 90-plus days of beaches, balmy weather and barbecue with style and beauty essentials that are both fashionable and functional. Here are seven necessities for spending the season in style.

1 Whimsical prints: Don't just daydream about fields of poppies, bundles of wildflowers or beds of coral -- wear them. These snapshots of summer appear on dresses, skirts, shorts and blouses. Be creative with mixing subtle ones, or keep it simple by sticking to one pattern per ensemble.

2 A pucker that pops: Take a vacation from the usual pale pinks and crimson lip colors with vibrant, fruity ones (think yummy orange, grape, strawberry and cherry tones). These not-your-everyday shades glossed many models' lips on runways at New York Fashion Week, meaning your smile will not only be flirty and fun, but also on trend.

3 A seasonal scent: Indulge your senses with wafts of magnolia blossoms, jasmine and roses wherever you go with a perfume that marries the aromas of these and other summer fragrances. Just a few spritzes or dabs are all it takes to make a chilly May morning smell like a humid August evening.

4 Eye-catching wedges: Give sandals permission to make a statement. Chunky heels have become canvases for tribal prints, zig-zags, florals and a slew of other geometric shapes sure to make what's on your feet the envy of other fashion fans at the beach.

5 A practical swimsuit: Swimsuits are often worn for more than swimming. Entertaining guests, chasing children, searching for seashells, cleaning the patio and visiting a water park are some other reasons to slip into one, making comfort and coverage key. Try a tankini (two-piece suit with a tank-length top and bikini briefs or boy shorts) or a stylish one-piece (yes, those do exist) with skirted bottom or gathered fabric across the torso -- lifesavers for creating the look of a more slender silhouette.

6 A color-shocker: Rival the sunset with apparel in bold brights. Tangerine, hot pink, sunny buttercup and neons are a few worth incorporating into a wardrobe's color palette for the warm months ahead. Heat up the shock value by combining solids in varying shades, such as yellow and plum or pink and orange. For those hesitant about donning too many hues, balance brights with something neutral, such as a nude pump or a khaki pencil skirt.

7 Tinted moisturizer with SPF: Sunbathe safely with a cream that soothes skin while protecting against UVA and UVB rays. To avoid adding something extra to a repertoire of cosmetics, find one with some color that can double as a foundation.

High Performance | K8 Hardy's 'Untitled Runway Show'

New York Times (blog)

This past weekend, as part of the Whitney Biennial, the artist K8 Hardy presented “Untitled Runway Show, 2012,” which was exactly as it sounds, a full-scale live runway show in the museum’s fourth-floor gallery.

The hairstylist Duffy created the swooping, spray-painted hair landscapes, James Kaliardos provided the off-register, overly tan makeup, and Hardy herself designed the collection, a combination of found pieces (or ready-mades in the tradition of Duchamp) like a pair of wide-leg jeans and a shrunken T-shirt, and ornate get-ups that could justifiably be called sculptures, like a dress constructed out of multiple padded bras.

“I want people to think of the entire runway show as a work of art,” Hardy says. “It’s not a fake runway show and it’s not a chance for me to make clothes.” Hardy, who has worked as a stylist and published a fashion zine, FashionFashion, chose her medium this time around as a form of mimicry — by which she means a copy that is not a copy. “It’s a calling out,” she says. “I never cared to have a show just to share my sense of style to the world. I don’t think I would even wear anything in the show. I used every platform having a show gave me to interrupt its normal and largely unquestioned flow.”

Getting the hang of lingerie in New York

Sunday Times.lk

Cheynelle Mendis is described as "a pixie of a designer in a strappy yellow dress and sandals" and she is all smiles as she talks about her life living the dream in New York City. As a designer for MAS Design Inc New York, she lives and commutes to work from Manhattan, enough to make any girl green with envy.

Fashion design was not something Cheynelle stumbled upon. From a small age, she knew what she wanted to be. Her grandmother Barbara, a dressmaker, was her inspiration.

Born in Dubai, Cheynelle and her family moved back to Sri Lanka when she was four years old and from then on she lived in the bosom of her family, most often with her grandmother. “I used to watch her design and sew and eventually when I got a little older, I would help her. Growing up in that environment, you could say it was no surprise to anyone when I decided to become a fashion designer,” she says with a laugh.

She schooled at Alethea International, and found it to be a great place to nurture her talent. For her A Levels she chose her subjects with purpose. Chemistry, for a more in-depth knowledge on textiles and dying chemicals (“You’d be surprised how useful that turned out to be,” she adds), Business Studies for obvious reasons, and Computer Science-“For no real reason at all!” she grins.

First-Ever Timex® Watch Dress Creates "Moment in Time" on Red Carpet

MarketWatch (press release)

"As a designer, I'm always looking for new materials that I can use in unexpected ways. Using Timex watches in my design has been invigorating," says Mr. Siriano. "I am thrilled to have partnered with such an iconic brand - I never thought I would be designing a dress for Christina Ricci made of working Timex watches - it's genuinely a red carpet 'moment in time.'"

Inspired by the Timex brand's wide range of fashionable and stylish collections, the talented trio worked together to create a dress that fit Ms. Ricci's elegant, yet edgy, style. In fact, they were given more than 1,000 watches to help craft their vision.

Timex fashion watch styles grace the pages of Vogue, ELLE, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle and The New York Times Sunday Style, as well as fashion blogs such as What I Wore and My Style Pill. Since Timex offers such a large, on trend selection - from leather strapped oversized watches to delicately jewel-toned oval faced timepieces to links in black, gold and brushed metal - the choices were endless, making it challenging to narrow down which to use.

Behind the Bentley: Hilfiger savors his busy days

Charlotte Observer

(AP Photo/Charles Sykes)

Hilfiger has been in the fashion business for more than 40 years, starting at a little denim shop in Elmira, N.Y., and now at the helm of a brand that's one of the most recognizable in the world. This spring, he added “American Idol” style adviser to his resume. His peers at the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored him Monday night with a lifetime achievement award.

NEW YORK When you wake up as Tommy Hilfiger, the day's possibilities are almost endless.

Maybe you'll be jetting off to Paris or Hong Kong on business, or to the lovely island of Mystique for pleasure. Really, if he wanted to, he could just sit in his superluxe apartment at The Plaza Hotel overlooking Central Park, arranging the dozens of upward facing pencils that sit on his desk in the library.

That's not the Hilfiger way, though. He likes to work. He wants to work.

Clothes Encounters | The Deste Fashion Collection at Barneys

New York Times (blog)

“It's hard to mix fashion and art,” Helmut Lang said at the party to unveil the new window installations at Barneys New York in Midtown. An artist and a former fashion designer, Lang knows of which he speaks. But last night fashion and art went down
exceedingly well together, thanks in large part to the evening’s mix masters: Dennis Freedman, Barneys’ creative director, and the Greek art collector Dakis Joannou, the founder of the Deste Foundation of Contemporary Art, who presented works from his destefashioncollection, including a giant portrait of Yves Saint Laurent by the photographer Juergen Teller, a multimedia ensemble featuring a Viktor & Rolf asymmetrical tulle evening gown and a computer printer by the poet Patrizia Cavalli, as well as Lang’s minimalist commentary on the politics of fashion, “Front Row.”

UWS Community Board Wants Fashion Week Out, Out, Out

Gothamist

And the terms for those events, despite being on public property, are not easy to come by. But, for a sense of the money: according to Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates, Fashion Week alone will pay $17.2 million over five years to use the park.
'Anna Wintour better watch out', the locals are getting restless! Since the last Fashion Week came to a close neighbors near Lincoln Center have been quite vocal about their displeasure with the way the semiannual event treats Damrosch Park, the space behind Lincoln Center where FW moved after leaving Bryant Park in 2010. Yesterday they upped the ante. DNAinfo reports that last night Community Board 7 voted 33-4 to "push Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Parks Department to find a new permanent site for Fashion Week and to consult the board on any future agreements with Lincoln Center about its use."

The core of the neighbor's issue is the way the park appears during the all-to-brief times when the Fashion Week tents and other events aren't up, which, according to CB7 member Elizabeth Starkey "looks like after a bomb hit." Making matters worse is the fact that the 56 trees in the park which the Parks Department tore down in 2010 are still gone, making it an unpleasant place if you want a bit of shade.

Of course, the Community Board's vote doesn't really have much weight here, but pressure never hurt anyone. The 2.44-acre green space was leased to Lincoln Center in 2010 under a 10-year contract which allows them to sublease it for private events. And the terms for those events, despite being on public property, are not easy to come by. But, for a sense of the money: according to Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates, Fashion Week alone will pay $17.2 million over five years to use the park.

Considering the fact that Fashion Week alone is estimated to bring in $865 million in economic activity a year, we highly doubt it'll be going anywhere anytime soon. But at least neighbors are letting their feelings be known and letting some steam out?

The mayors office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Community Board's resolution.

Leighton Meester: Pretty Baby

Philippine Star

With a fleeting a conversation with Ricky Lo of the Phillipine Star, Leighton flew in from last week of May (the 25th) in time for the Penshoppe's Philippine Fashion Week event the next day and left barely 48 hours later as quietly as she came. Conversations did a free-wheeling one-on-one with her at the presidential suite of Manila Peninsula where she, like Ian the week before, was billeted.

Asked how she felt about her first visit to the Philippines, Leighton smiled, hardly showing any signs of jetlag even after a long haul from the US, “I’ve been looking forward to this visit. My best friend is a Filipino. She and her mom have been telling me interesting things about the Philippines. It’s hot here but I like the weather.”

Fashion BID seeks a new label for itself

A changing district wants distance from its garmento past.

The NY Fashion District Landmark - Photo by: Buck Ennis

The Fashion Center Business Improvement District has worn its name proudly for nearly two decades. Yet come 2013, a wardrobe change of sorts will take place. As designers exit the garment center, replaced by new tenants including hoteliers and visual arts firms, the BID has decided that it's time for a new name, symbolically signaling an end to the era of buttons, needles and thread.

The BID, which was formed as a management association in 1993, recently started the process of rebranding itself, playing up strengths like its midtown location and proximity to three transportation hubs in order to attract fresh office tenants and more vibrant retailers. The reinvention will include a new name and marketing strategy.

Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost

of Cheap Fashion - by Elizabeth L Cline

Dressed to destroy: A skeptical look at cheap fashion

Los Angeles Times

Elizabeth L. Cline goes for the jugular straight away in this exploration of the consumer love affair with cheap clothing.

"Fashion," she writes, "largely deserves its bad reputation. It's now a powerful, trillion-dollar global industry that has too much influence over our pocketbooks, self-image and storage spaces. It behaves with embarrassingly little regard for the environment or human rights."

In her new book, "Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion," Cline begins with a mea culpa. A New York journalist, she reveals that she too was once one of those naughty consumers who snapped up multiple pairs of badly made $7 shoes because they were cheap.

LET'S TALK ABOUT Miami...

Getting a Little TAudrey

by Katherine McPherson

Since its inception in 2009, the Miami-based jewelry line TAudrey (pronounced taud-rey), has been adorning the necks, wrists and hands of fashionistas in the know. Inspired by the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, staring the impossibly chic Audrey Hepburn, TAudrey founder Tiffany Ortiz made the iconic style maven the namesake of her line because, as she puts it, “The TAudrey woman commits only to one thing: dressing to the 'T' in every occasion."

Ortiz’s vision for TAudrey is jewelry that makes a statement. She creates pieces for busy woman who still make time to look their best. “I am inspired by career woman and women on the go, who make it a point to still look pulled together even if they only had five minutes to get ready,” she says. “I wanted my line to be a woman’s go-to accessories where you can just throw on a few pieces and [they] instantly complete an outfit.” She also makes sure her jewelry is comfortable to wear. “All my pieces are lightweight. You can wear them for hours and not feel uncomfortable.”

What drew Ortiz to jewelry was a love for accessories and layering. “In Miami, you have to get creative with layering. It’s usually too hot to layer with clothing, so you have to play with accessories.” Says Ortiz.

“I’ve also always been a really hands-on person and loved metals and creating things by hand.” She primarily works with gold fill because it carries a higher percentage of the metal, upkeeps very well and helps with keeping price-points moderate, which was important to Ortiz. She also plays with a lot of mother of pearl, an ode to her Audrey Hepburn inspirations.

Designer Maria Cornejo on Her New Show With Artist Alice Waese ...

Hollywood Reporter

Zero Maria Cornejo is one line of clothes out of New York that is an insiders' fashion brand, and her New York fashion week runway shows always prove that, as they are attended by editors at the highest levels of the fashion business. Her clothes are always comfortable and chic, go from day to night with a quick change of shoes or jewelry and have an avant-garde city cool-girl edge that's sophisticated without hitting that "arty" line too hard. In other words, they're rather perfect. Her pants, sweaters and leather jackets have amazing fit and and a little twis,- and her dresses achieve the impossible trifecta: They're sexy and comfortable and interesting. All this, and her prices are much better than most designer clothes, but the quality doesn't suffer. No wonder smart women love her.

Designer Maria Cornejo to Hold L.A. Event This Week

Cornejo has a longtime small West Village boutique at Greenwich and Jane, but her eponymous Melrose Place space is many times the size and has the airy feeling of an art gallery. That's why she decided to host a small art gathering for her friend, former employee and present artist Alice Waese, from New York City, who creates art out of metal, silver and paper. Cornejo doesn't get to L.A. often as she's busy creating nine collections a year (two for men, the rest for women, but then there's shoes, handbags, belts and knitwear), but when she did recently, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with her to pick her considerable brain.

A Changing of the Guard

New York Times

ROMAIN BRAU, a founder of the avant-garde-and-beyond Antwerp store RA, where the most mainstream designer on the menu may be the Belgian conceptualist Walter Van Beirendonck, depends on creativity and young talent to lure the most curious of shoppers. London is often the place where he finds them.

“London is the best,” Mr. Brau said. “They have the structure and the sponsors to push those kids up.”
During a four-day fashion event that ended here on Sunday, dedicated for the first time to the city’s men’s wear designers, it was hard to miss Mr. Brau, a tall, slender, shaggy man wearing a chubby teal knit fur jacket over a sheer, bead-trimmed tunic and white long johns, which were tucked into his boots. On his head loomed a large bird, a tiara made of glittering sprays of peacock feathers, which he had to hold down to keep it from fluttering away in the breeze as he walked.

Eccentricity is common in fashion. And London, with its prestigious design schools and reputation for producing figures of enormous creativity like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, embraces individuality more than other fashion capitals.

So it was somewhat of a surprise that many of the young designers showing here this week offered a vision that was, to say the least, conventionally safe, either rooted in strict tailoring or the animated prints and neon sportswear of the 1980s. Rather than a rebellion, they gave us shorts, and quite a few varieties of them.

A little rebellion would have been welcome, though it goes to show just how much London has changed from the days of Ms. Westwood’s incendiary, royalty-snubbing collaborations with Malcolm McLaren, under the Sex label, that she was among the designers who attended an opening reception last week at St. James’s Palace, hobnobbing with Prince Charles himself.

“Somebody suggested I might even be an icon of fashion,” the prince said at the party. “It’s taken me 64 bleeding years.”

Death of young Philadelphia model Vanessa Watson exposes pervasiveness of domestic violence

Philadelphia Inquirer

Jenice Armstrong

Vanessa Watson was slain by her boyfriend,

who then killed himself, in January.

Vanessa Watson was slain by her boyfriend, who then killed himself, in January.

AT ONLY AROUND 5 feet 6 inches tall, Vanessa Watson wasn't standard model height, but she once boasted that she walked as if she were 6 feet tall.

Strikingly attractive with a chameleonlike appeal, Watson managed to get work at Philly Fashion Week, on BET's "Rip the Runway," and for the Nelli Millard's show at New York's Fashion Week. And if Watson was still far from supermodel status, "Ms. Banks DoDat" — as she was called on Facebook and Twitter — was, as they say, on the come up.

"DoDat" was a reference to her go-getter ways. At 26, Watson, whose professional name was Vanessa Banks, had earned enough to purchase a three-story, five-bedroom, two-bathroom home in North Philly near Broad and Erie. Family was important to her, so — along with her own three kids — she moved in her younger sister and family. She also let her boyfriend, Louis McCrae, move in.

Supermodel speaks out against coal, support new regulations

FuelFix (blog)

Supermodel Elle Macpherson is speaking out against a proposed bill that would cripple recently released mercury and air toxics standards.

In a guest column on CNN.com, the model, who has also done work with the Sierra Club, said it is unacceptable that “these landmark protections are under attack in Congress.”

“It has taken decades to finally get clean-air protections from mercury in place,” she wrote. “We can’t let Congress overturn them.”

The Senate is set to vote today on a resolution by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., that would kill new Environmental protection Agency rules aimed at curbing emissions of mercury and other air toxins from coal-fired power plants.

Inhofe said the new regulations would kill jobs and threaten the reliability of the power grid.

Macpherson, however, disagrees with those assertions.

The mother of two said the regulations are necessary to protect children and the general public from toxic chemicals that officials have said can impair child development and cause asthma attacks.

“Congress has the opportunity to be a part of the solution,” she wrote. “It can protect our children’s health and our air and water. There’s no more important job than that.”

Republicans and industry officials have vigorously fought the mercury emission rules and proposed cross-state air pollution rules, claiming the two regulations could threaten the reliability of the power grid and cause companies to cut jobs.

Several companies, including Dallas-based Luminant, have threatened to shutdown or idle coal-fired plants because of the upcoming regulations.

Full Figured Fashion Week sets standard for industry

Examiner.com

New York's annual Full Figured Fashion Week, a four-day fashion extravaganza, just completed another successful year. Thanks to an inspiring woman named Gwen DeVoe this fashion event has become one of the most highly anticipated weeks of the year.

The events have raised the bar and set the standards for plus-size fashions. The fashion industry has come a long way from flaunting waif-like clothing on waif-like models strutting runways for years. When more than half of the population of women proudly wears size 12 and up, they will happily spend their hard earned money on clothing that fits their beautiful curves as well as brings out their inner diva.

The week featured activities such as sunset cruises, showcases, shopping events, panel discussions, parties and the most highly anticipated – the runway show. The week not only focuses on the hottest plus-size fashions this year, but also allows retailers, boutique owners and entrepreneurs who are considering starting and operating a business in the industry, a chance to combine their resources and talents in a high energy environment that rivals other Fashion Weeks. Capping off the week, the 2012 FFFWeek Industry Awards Show honored and supported the industry’s leaders

Candice Swanepoel – The South African Angel | FashionTV’s Model of the Week

FashionTV.com

She was born in a tiny South African province and recently climbed all the way to the top of the fashion world. Her modeling career is a story of many successes and her sweet looks and figure make us want to see more from this bombshell. Candice Swanepoel is our Model of the Week.

At fifteen, South African beauty Candice Swanepoel, was scouted while shopping in a local flea market. Little did she know that this shopping spree back in 2003 would change Swanepoel’s ordinary life into a rollercoaster of catwalks, fashion magazine covers, ad campaigns and a lot of attention from the fashion industry.

One year later, sixteen year old Swanepoel was earning approximately 5,000 Euros for a day’s work. Nowadays, she has become one of the world’s most successful models and was recently ranked in 10th place on Forbes’ list of highest paid models in the world, with earnings of about 3.1 million dollars.

Rocking the Runway

Candice Swanepoel’s debut was at the 2006 Tommy Hilfiger Spring Fashion Show in New York. That same season she walked for Dolce & Gabbana during Milan Fashion Week. Swanepoel left a lasting impression and during the Fall of 2006, she walked for some of the best brands such as Betsey Johnson, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Heatherette and more.

Spring of 2007 was a great season for Swanepoel once again. She walked for Diane von Furstenberg, Trace Reese, Rock & Republic and Nanette Lepore during New York Fashion Week

Dakar: 'Capital of Franco-African fashion'

CNN

It may not have the allure of Paris or New York but Dakar in Senegal is quickly making a name for itself as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion stakes.

The 10th annual Dakar Fashion Week wrapped on Sunday, attracting an international audience to its showcase of African collections.

A decade after Senegalese designer Adama Ndiaye launched the first show, Dakar has now earned itself the unique title of being the capital of Franco-African fashion.

It's an important milestone for a country few would associate with high-end fashion.

Arise Magazine Fashion Week 2012 comes toAfrica's Victorian ladies

Fashion analyst Helen Jennings says this year's event, attended by the "godfather of African fashion" Alphadi, cemented Dakar's reputation.

Jennings, the editor of Arise, a London-based African fashion magazine, pointed to the important differences between English and French-inspired fashion on the continent.

"Anglophone Africa is much more westernized on the whole and therefore gets more international attention. While Francophone designers, although still very contemporary, do veer toward more traditional styles, especially the Senegalese boubou and north African kaftan.

"It made for a refreshing change to see these influences on the catwalk."

However, she added that Dakar was by no means the capital of African fashion: "Without a doubt those capitals are Nigeria (host of Arise Magazine Fashion week) and South Africa (which runs Africa Fashion Week)."

Watch: African street fashion

The African fashion industry's growth in recent years is part of a wider economic boom on the continent, says Jennings.

Review of New York's Full Figured Fashion Week 2012

Examiner.com

Full Figured Fashion Week is slightly similar to other fashion week events , but it is larger-literally. All of the events hosted by Sonsi Full Figured Fashion Week catered to plus-size women. Fashion sponsors such as Pretty Pear Bride who provided a sneak peek into designer plus-size bridal gowns, MYNT1792, who provided plus-size casual and formal wear, and well known outlets such as Lane Bryant and Ashley Stewart gave a glimpse of both casual wear and swimwear.

This plus-size gala consisted of an all white boat party, mini fashion show at Bloomingdale's, Indy Fashion Show that featured upcoming designers such as Texas native Savannah Red, a networking event, two after parties, and a shopping spree event for guest to shop from fashion type vendors and of course the fashion show and other private events that were by invitation only. All of the events I attended were fun and exciting and never held a dull moment.

Fashion in a time of hardline Islam

New York Daily News

The Sahel's most feted fashionista, Tuareg designer Alphadi, hit the runway at Dakar Fashion Week with a homage to Mali, whose vast north is largely under under control of hardline Islamists.
under control of hardline Islamists.

The bright colours, occasionally bare arms and sparkle that sashayed down the catwalk were definitely not in keeping with sharia, the strict Islamic law that has been enforced in northern Mali for the past two months.

"That's the idea," laughed the man who was introduced to the crowd at the final show of the 10th annual Dakar Fashion Week on Saturday night as the "Magician of the Desert".

Alphadi was born in the fabled city of Timbuktu, an ancient trading hub, intellectual centre and popular metaphor for a mythical faraway place.

But since jihadists exploited a political vacuum following a coup d'etat and planted their ominous black flags in the town in late March, tens of thousands have fled and those that remain have to follow strict Islamic law.

Women have to wear veils and are not permitted to wear trousers, smokers are flogged and cigarettes and alcohol destroyed.

"It shocks me," Alphadi said in an interview with AFP on Sunday.

"Timbuktu has always been a secular town, everyone living together, sharing, blacks and whites, very cosmopolitan. A mysterious town!"

New York fashion show features Cordillera warrior art

GMA News

Feathered headgear, eye tattoo and lines that define. Young designer Anna Puruganan showcased these details and more in a collection inspired by the indigenous art and traditions of the Cordillera tribes. The fashion show held on June 21 at the Philippine Center on Fifth Avenue presented a collection of style she described as “a lost art.”
“I want us to remember that this was the original Filipino style before we became a colony. This was our culture, the kind of art that has been lost now and I don’t want to forget that,” Anna told The FilAm. Born in Brazil and raised in Canada, Anna studied fashion design at La Salle’s Benilde College in Manila. Story is that she met this indigenous band, Kadangyan, who told her about their story.

The band’s music “Kaluluwa” played in the background, a perfect rhythm for Anna’s themed parade of clothing using fabrics made of pina, silk, hablon and abaca.
“Long time ago, the Cordillera tribe was considered warriors and headhunters,” explained Anna, the daughter of a diplomat. Her mother, Merl, heads the Dual Citizenship department of the Philippine consulate. The tattoos used on the models were very significant to the tribe, she said. “The tattoo was a symbol of their preparation going to the war,” she said. “I really thought it was beautiful. ”She explained further her use of the red-gold-and-white color scheme. The white pina and silk is a tribute to the Cordillera women dressing partly naked. The touches of red symbolize the “blood that was shed and how many heads were taken.” The metallic accents depict women preparing for battle.

“For a really young designer who is starting in the business, she already knows what she wants and who she is,” said fellow designer Izza Dungca.

“She’s glamrock and edgy. It’s a very modern take and I love her idea of Filipiniana not being the conservative and the costume-y that we see or that we’re used to seeing.”
One of the models, Irene Abaya-Campos, said Anna’s collection brings out the “modern side of tribal.”
The show’s director, Erno Hormillosa, said Anna’s style is modern and very edgy and “creates a good metamorphosis of our culture.” - The FilAm

Big Fashion Weekend For Gaborone in August

The Bostwana Gazette

It’s official; Botswana first international fashion show is back again and this time it’s every bit bigger and more fabulous.
Last year, international Motswana designer Koketso Chiepe hosted Gaborone Fashion Night, an event that can claim to be the country’s first international fashion show featuring the designs of Koketso herself, winner of Vivica Fox’s Glam God,IndashioBatory and top local designers Mpho Kuaho and Botho Chalebgwa among others.

Fashion Night was also graced by Hollywood actress Yaya Dacosta and supermodel Sessilee Lopez. Fronting the event as the official face was New York based Motswana model Kaone Kario.

The event set the standard for future fashion shows in Botswana and garnered massive international buzz for the country’s fledgling fashion industry through twitter and even saw one of Mpho Kuaho outfits hit the international red carpet courtesy of YayaDacosta as seen in Essence Magazine.

Recounting last year’s event Chiepe revealed,” According to everybody it went really well.I knew what was going on behind the scenes, but I didn’t even see half of what was going on in the front (laughs)! But it was the pictures afterwards that revealed everything to me because it was just so crazy leading up to the show. My International guests were also so impressed. It was my first ever attempt at creating an event. Seeing everything come together and everybody just coming back with really good reviews, felt like it was a success at the end of the day, we pulled it off.”

Volunteers raise money with fashion show

Asbury Park Press

Two years after a bitter fight over the NY/NJ Baykeeper oyster restoration project .... The event, a fashion show called Women of Distinction, benefited Caregivers Volunteers of Central New Jersey and was held at the Clarion Hotel.

The fashion show models were members of the community and many of them were volunteers for the organization as well, said Lynette Whiteman, executive director of the organization.

Organizers could not say Wednesday how much they raised, though the event collected about $12,000 last year.

Those funds help caregivers provide support for local seniors who need their assistance. Volunteers drive people to medical appointments such as doctor visits, lab work and physical therapy.

“They pick them up take them there and take them home,” Whiteman said.

When seniors have medical or vision problems “everyone is bothering them to ‘give up your car keys’,” Whiteman said. “But this is not New York, we don’t have public transportation.”

That is where caregivers comes in and helps out. They do grocery shopping and will come and stay with a person who has dementia while the home caregiver gets some respite, Whiteman said.

Pop-Up Pretty! NYC Partners with Local Retailer for Fashion Tech STORY Store

Betabeat

Pop-ups are ever popping up about the city like so many mushrooms after a rainstorm, so it was only a matter of time before we saw one just for fashion startups. The New York City Economic Development Corporation has just announced that it’ll be collaborating with retailer Story on a competition dubbed Project Pop-Up NYC. It’s targeted to both up-and-coming retailers and (more importantly for our purposes) innovative fashion tech startups.

Up to three winners will get their very own pop-up within STORY’s Chelsea outpost during the month of September, which of course coincides nicely with Fashion Week. They’ll also win PR support, mentoring and “exposure at key industry events.” That last bit sounds a bit fuzzy, but the right mentor is a pearl beyond price. As many as eight other companies will also get display space.

Judges include Bonobos CEO Andy Dunn, High Line Venture Partners’ Shana Fisher, and Lucky editor-in-chief Brandon Holly.

The criteria:

Being an existing fashion retailer and/or fashion-related technology company; able to support a pop-up store with saleable merchandise (retailers) or a demo/showcase (fashion technology companies) during the month of September; be based in New York City; have been in business for at least one year; and have annual sales or sales projections of over $25,000.

Beyonce Buys Jigga A Jet For Being A Good Papa!

Bey just keeps on giving! After penning a open letter to one of her all-time favorite performers, Michael Jackson, Beyonce also released two personal photos on her website IAm.Beyonce.com. It was also revealed that Bey dropped stacks on stacks on stacks of paper on a new plane for her hubby, Jigga-Who!

Keeping their relationship spiced up, the House of Dereon designer reportedly bought her hubby a plane for Father's Day! According to Pop Crush:

“The Bombardier Challenger 850 has a flash interior including a cream leather living room, a kitchen, a bedroom and two bathroom,” reveals a source. “Beyonce thought this would be the perfect way to show Jay how much of a great dad he is.”

Spending the last few months touring overseas with husband Jay-Z, last night Queen B posted a photo of her standing closely by her man's side. Although it's an epic picture, it doesn't seem to be a live shot, as there's a computer mouse icon dead in the center of the couple's legs!

The second photo brings out the gangster side of the 30-year-old Houston, Texas native. Covering half of her face with a cloth in her b-boy stance, it appears Bey had herself a little fun while eating dinner. In the black and white pic, she uses the table's utensil napkin to put on the persona. We wonder if Jay was behind the camera, snapping the shot?

June 28, 2012, (Sawfnews.com) - Blake Lively made us drool wearing a plunging yellow back baring Gucci gown at the New York premiere of Savages at the School of Visual Arts Theater in NYC on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.

The 24-year-old actress was recently announced the face of Gucci Première women's fragrance; understandably she was promoting the designer brand whole chestedly heartedly.

The buttercup-yellow halter gown, made of pleated silk Georgette fabric, was one of a kind made specially for her. It featured a plunging V-neckline, cinched sash waist and a floor grazing full skirt.

She accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels consisting of turquoise statement earrings and bangles, with one of them an exact match to the earrings.

Her neatly swept back hair was styled in a thick over-the-shoulder tousled fishtail braid. She adorned it with a shimmering oxidized silver hair-tie at its base and wrapped her own hair around the elastic tie at the bottom.

She kept her makeup light, letting her enviable decolletage and dewy skin take center stage.

She completed her look with glossy pink lips, black liner on top lashlines and mascara coated eyelashes.

This is Lively's second dazzling look in a row and within a week; she was earlier seen in a Zuhair Murad dress and sexy retro waves at the LA premiere of Savages.

Rock N Fashion show to highlight local talent

Lincoln Journal Star

Orion Walsh will be performing Saturday night at the Rococo Theatre. But it won’t be an ordinary show for the Lincoln singer-songwriter -- fashion models usually don’t do their thing while he’s playing local clubs or around the country.

That’s because Walsh’s set will be part of The Rock N Fashion Show, a combination of music and fashion that returns to Lincoln after a three-year absence.

Produced by Lincoln native Joshua Ferdinand, who now lives in Kansas City where he does similar events throughout the year, the show fuses live local music, designers, boutiques and models.

Walsh played a similar Lincoln show in 2009 and is happy to be back on the Saturday’s bill.

“It’s pretty cool,” Walsh said. “It’s something definitely different. The band plays and models show local designer clothes at the same time. Three years ago, I thought it would be kind of weird. But it’s pretty fun. It is weird stagewise, because most of the attention is on them (the models). But it’s fun.”

Walsh will provide one of three sets of music Saturday. The others will come from FREAKABOUT and Slick Fiction.

While they perform, models will present fashions from three Lincoln boutiques and three Lincoln designers. They are Tsuru, Stella, Kaity Rathman Design, Be Yourself, Donna Faye Couture and Just Because by Kate Walz. Keeping the entire event local, Hair and makeup will be headed up by Illusions Hair Salon. Chad Sibler of KOLN/KGIN-TV will serve as the show’s master of ceremonies.

“The show has grown in scope and energy for five years running, and it continues to impress audiences by drawing on local talent that would compete head to head with the best of NYC or Los Angeles,” Ferdinand said in a news release.

Three years ago, Somasphere worked up a special set for the fashion show. Walsh isn’t doing that. But he’ll be there with his band rather than playing solo, and he has added horn parts to some songs to keep

The Czarinas Are Back

New York Times

By ERIC WILSON. Published: June 29, 2012. OUTSIDE the Ritz Paris on the Place Vendôme, where paparazzi congregate whenever celebrities are in town for Fashion Week, a striking alabaster-skinned woman posed on her way into the hotel one morning in March.
She wore navy silk pajamas with white piping, a teal topcoat draped over her shoulders, oversize cat-eye sunglasses and a loosely tied babushka over her hair, giving her the mysterious, nearly plastic, impression of a 1950s Hollywood movie star. Hours later, she emerged in a pale blue halter dress covered with spots, and posed once again. The next morning, it was a Chanel suit in black tweed and a matching beret, worn askew.

Her name is Ulyana Sergeenko, and though she is not yet internationally famous, she is certainly well known among the fashion designers of this particular part of the world. She is one of their best customers, the wife of a Russian insurance billionaire, a former model, a star of street-style photographers and a burgeoning designer and photographer herself.

Suzanne Perron-Top Female Achiever

My New Orleans

For many fashion designers, moving to New York City and designing for some of the biggest names in the industry is an almost unattainable dream; for Suzanne Perron, it was a not only a reality, but a stepping stone to a career that transported her from the runways of New York Fashion Week to her own design studio off Magazine Street.

“I started sewing as a young child and wanted to be a fashion designer since I was 5,” Perron says. “I fell in love with fashion back when fashion was about exceptional artistry, construction and vision. I would marvel at the works of Vionet, Dior and Valentino, to name a few.”

Her passion for the creativity of the fashion industry led Perron to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City after graduating from Louisiana State University in 1991.

Kerr: Orlando Bloom makes me nervous during fashion shows

New York Daily News

She walked the runways of Paris just two months after giving birth to baby Flynn, but one audience still has the power to make Miranda Kerr nervous - her husband, actor Orlando Bloom.

"I never really want Orlando to be there [in the audience of a show] because it makes me nervous," the 29-year-old Victoria's Secret model told the August issue of Harper's Bazaar UK.

"But last year, he was like, 'You have no choice, I'm coming.' And the one time he was attending the show, my shoe decided to fall off."

The stunning beauty, who dons a sexy peek-a-boo bra and red riding blazer on the cover of the issue, revealed that the one thing she is confident of, however, is her talents as a new mom.

So while everyone is soaking up the summer sun, fashion designers are in the thick of pulling together their Spring 2013 collections.

And although we're excited to see all the fab Spring trends, this season is extra special since it marks the fifth anniversary of Harlem's Fashion Row--the premiere organization championing the careers and success of black fashion designers.

In celebration of this milestone Brandice Henderson, founder and CEO of HFR, ramping up the organization's annual fashion show.

Va. Beach teen selected as spokesmodel for fall show

The Virginian-Pilot

It was only two years ago that I observed Shalea Poole, then a lanky Virginia Beach teen, take her beginning steps in a modeling class.

Now the 17-year-old Landstown High senior has been selected as the face of the Lawrence Brothers' Trendsetters 2012 Hair and Fashion Show. Shalea will appear in print campaigns and will be featured during the event, scheduled for Nov. 18 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

It's a significant opportunity for Shalea. The Lawrence Brothers' show, in six years, has become one of the major style events on the East Coast. Attendance shot up from a few hundred at the inaugural event to more than 5,000 last year.

Shalea is signed with Virginia Beach-based Splash Model Management and as such also has modeled in Virginia Fashion Week. Other gigs have included modeling in New York Fashion Week, Fashion Week Swim and fashion shows for "Project Runway" and "Hype Hair" in New York.

Virginia Fashion Week 2012

Speaking of Splash Model, owner Ann Leister has set this year's Virginia Fashion Week for Oct. 17-21 in Norfolk.
Virginia Fashion Week, in its sixth year, has partnered with nonprofit Fractured Atlas for sponsorship. Fractured Atlas helps support artists and art organizations.

The NEW fashion capital

Vogue Australia

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia puts Sydney on the fashion map. ... around the world. It also cemented Australia's place in the top five international fashion destinations around the world – Milan, New York, London, Paris and now Sydney.

With Mercedes-Benz on board, Australia’s preeminent fashion week is back on the map.

In addition to the world-class sponsor, the event boasted countless drawcards. The city itself is the perfect backdrop for the fashion spectacle – the cordial climate is enough to pull tourists on its own, but the Overseas Passenger Terminal highlights it as if under a microscope. With arguably our country’s most famous landmarks - the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge - both available at a glance, it’s no wonder so many internationals booked in early and stayed on longer. In fact, the calibre of international guests this year shows the proof is in the peplum; Sydney is a fashion, authority in its own right.

Of course, the designers on show weren’t exactly of the novice variety either. In fact, far from being local phenomena, Australian names are now competing on a global scale. With respected industry veteran Jenny Kee showing for the first time in almost two decades, Parisian favourite Collette Dinnigan awarded the 2012 Fashion Laureate and Hollywood go-to Johanna Johnson revealing a 50-piece collection, it’s no exaggeration to say Australian design has worldwide appeal.

Upcycle charity fashion show features work of Franovik

Fashion (blog)

Upcycle fashion firm Franovik Designs out of Plantation recycles fabric into one-of-a-kind designs.

The models will be wearing tablecloths, curtains and even the fabric from a sofa.

That’s the whole point of the “Green Couture – Designers for a Cause” annual fashion show and dinner Thursday, July 12 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at The Signature Grand in Davie.

The charity event – produced by the networking group The Women of the Roundtable - features the eco-friendly fall collection of Franovik Designs, a team featuring fashion designer Francisco J. Perez and graphic designer Victor M. Vega.

“I don’t sew,” said Vega from his home in Plantation. “But I grew up in a family where we would make outfits from vintage pieces. And we [with Perez] started recycling fabrics way before it was popular. We use runners, satin bed sheets, old jackets, old jeans. Anything. Whatever is around. Instead of giving it to Goodwill or throwing it in the trash and making more trash, we make new things.”

Vega said that the two evolved into fashion design through making Halloween and Carnival costumes. “We always won first, second or third prize,” said Vega, who was born in New York and grew up in Puerto Rico; Perez is a Venezuela native. “We were always in the top three.”

After a splashy debut during 2008’s Funkshion: Fashion Week Miami Beach, a string of back-to-back fashion shows through 2010 landed the two a list of women clients “…who are going to galas and need a specific piece; something that no one else has.”

Katie Holmes to make Fashion Week debut in New York

Irish Independent

According to WWD, the actress is taking her Holmes & Yang spring collection to the international fashion event.

Launched in 2009 with her design partner Jeanne Yang, the range is stocked at New York department store Barneys and Harvey Nichols in London amongst other luxury stores.

Despite her recent high-profile split from husband Tom Cruise, the former Dawson’s Creek star is pushing ahead with her sartorial plans.

“A spokeswoman for the brand, which launched in 2009 and is available at Barneys New York, said Holmes’ personal matters aren’t affecting the line,” WWD reports.

It is the first time the brand will be shown in a fashion show.

Katie Holmes will join former good friend Victoria Beckham in presenting her garments at the highly anticipated event. The women initially struck up a friendship through their husbands but haven’t been pictured together for years.
“Will Katie (whisper it) rekindle her fashion friendship with a certain Victoria Beckham? Please let it be so!” British magazine Grazia writes. “The once-BFFs will be presenting their lines in the Big Apple at the same time, after all, and as a seasoned pro, [Victoria Beckham] would be the ideal candidate to offer some words of wisdom, right?

"Plus, if their matchy-matchy wardrobes make a comeback - remember the lookalike sunnies, the identikit bobs, the coordinated coats? - Katie's sartorial status would be sealed.”

Jessica’s fashion label has been going from strength to strength and has become one of the most successful celebrity brands ever.

There's nothing more magical than the idea of a fairytale coming to life, especially when Christian Louboutin is involved

The designer has finally unveiled his re-imagination of Cinderella's famous glass slippers to celebrate the re-release of Disney's most-loved animated picture.
"Her character and her story dictated the design to me, it was all there in the pages and the words of this tale," explained the designer. "Cinderella is not only an iconic character when it comes to grace and fairytale love, but also shoes. The dream is a major factor in my language of design. There are no limits in the world of fantasy and there is always a happily ever after."

Vanessa Simmons launches new swimwear line

The Grio

Vanessa Simmons is getting ready to launch her own line of swimwear, Rose by Vanessa Jean. With the Pastry Shoes franchise from she and her sister Angela on firm footing, Vanessa is stepping out to develop this independent project.

In an article on the Black Enterprise web site, Vanessa said about her new collection:

Creating Pastry will always be a special bond that Ang[ela] and I share, it taught me a lot about the business of fashion and I am so excited to use what I’ve learned to start up Rose by Vanessa Jean. It is definitely a lot different designing [swimwear] than sneakers especially because a lot of it is concentrated on a woman’s body and getting the right fit down packed."

The new line will feature pieces suitable for women of all sizes. Backing her on her fashion endeavor is Shark Tank‘s Daymond John, who acts as Vanessa’s partner and brand manager.
No stranger to the fashion world, John was once a fashion trendsetter in the early ’90s when he started up the FUBU brand. The vision behind FUBU, which stood for “For Us By Us,” wasn’t just a clothing brand; it was considered a lifestyle label for African Americans. Perhaps through this partnership, Vanessa and John will be able to recreate the creative energy that made FUBU so iconic

New York's The Cut Takes Aim at Vogue and Jezebel - FishbowlNY

mediabistro.com

New York’s fashion blog The Cut is getting set to expand, and so it is setting its sights high. According to The New York Times, The Cut is set to grow the week of August 13, backed by better coverage of fashion shows and new content overseen by the likes of former Gawker staffer Maureen O’Connor.

The goal? To take on Vogue and Jezebel. Adam Moss, New York’s editor-in-chief, told the Times that The Cut will be ”a high-end fashion magazine with the scrappiness of a blog.”

The Cut’s growth will surely generate more interest from fashion advertisers, who already like New York. The Times reports that fashion advertising rose by 34 percent this year, and beauty product ads increased by a whopping 100 percent.

Self Launching Fashion Site

By Chris O'Shea

Self is getting set to launch a very Pinterest-like site, called Selfcurateyourlook. According to Adweek, the site — which launches in September — is being tabbed as a “virtual trunk show,” where visitors can browse products hand-picked by Self’s staff, which are presented in a catalogue format. If a person likes something, they can save it in their “look book,” share it with others via social media or even click through and purchase it.

As might guess, this site is music to advertisers’ ears. Laura McEwen, vice president and publisher of Self, understands this, though she puts it in a more eloquent way.

“Self’s Virtual Trunk Show enables consumers to curate their own style while aligning with Self’s editorial fashion expertise and our advertisers’ brands,” McEwen told Adweek. “This site will also align Self more closely with our fashion and beauty partners.”

That’s a lot of aligning

Express invites Savannah public to massive fashion show in Monterey Square

Savannah Morning News

In a city defined by fashion, where runway shows come and go as frequently as tourists, it’s hard to imagine one turning heads like a pair of neon hot pants.

But that’s exactly what Savannahians should expect Friday when international fashion retailer Express takes over Monterey Square in the historic district, say company reps and local officials.
“It’s something you won’t see again in Savannah,” promises Jay Self, film services director for the city. “It’ll be like a New York or Milan fashion show.”

That’s exactly the exclusive air organizers are hoping to conjure when they set up their 70-foot runway at Gordon and Bull streets, on the south end of the square, starting this morning — but with a twis>.

They’re inviting the public to crash this party, called Rock the Sidewalk.

“What’s so great about it is that fashion shows from big brands are usually closed door,” said Jennifer Bayley, Express’ senior manager of public relations. “You have to be an editor or Olsen twin to get in.”
The Savannah show, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will be different. Though it will feature a bevy of international talent and the debut of Express’ men’s and women’s holiday lines, Savannahians will be invited to crowd the stage as the models strut their looks.

New York City Movie Theaters Forcing Fashion Statement Against Smaller Sodas on Employees

New York Observer

The passionate opposition of the pro-obesity lobby pro-soda-size-choice lobby has already assaulted Mayor Bloomberg with a ‘Million Gulp March‘ for Big Soda. What’s next? Fashion, for people and drinks of all sizes!

Apparently, some movie theater employees are trading in their regular workwear for a couture statement that speaks out against our city’s dictatorial soda size discrimination.

The shirt is becoming the hottest thing in street style since creepy men with cameras who aren’t Bill Cunningham took over Manhattan, as it’s been spotted outside the most fashionable film houses in New York, too. TEMECULA ---- Temecula Recycling and Promenade Temecula will present fashions made from recycled materials July 7 in a fashion show that will challenge guests' ideas of fashion and explore the artistic side of what fashion is to the individual.

The event will exhibit fashions created from used and recycled materials by students from the Art Department at Mount San Jacinto College and local designers and artists. The recycled wear must be made of at least 50 percent recycled items and will feature creative uses of items such as tin cans, metals, plastics, paper and clothing.

"Temecula Recycling opened my eyes to these amazing creative uses of recycled materials at a fashion event they hosted in April," commented Sher Haddon of Promenade Temecula in a press release. "When we started thinking about what inspires people to create their own signature look, we thought of these young designers and how they creatively used materials to individualize their style and explore their unique design esthetic."
The event will also serve as a springboard to encourage others to participate in the final round of Promenade Temecula's third season of Project Style, a contest where fashion-savvy shoppers compete locally, regionally and nationally for cash prizes and a grand prize trip to New York City and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

The event starts at 3 p.m. July 7 at the JCPenney Center Court. Call 951-296-0975 or visit promenadetemecula.com.

Vera Wang and husband split after 23 years

By Natalie Abrams,

*Less than a week ago, I followed a story on Vera Wang, this time we are saddened by her news of impending divorce.

Chenoweth's medical condition following the Wednesday afternoon accident in New York was not disclosed by publicist Jill Fritzo or CBS Television Studios. It was not immediately known if she was hospitalized.

Syracuse high school alum throws a hometown fashion show

Syracuse.com

Bingham High School grad Ke’Sean Lyons has spent the last few years stitching together opportunities and is back home to show what he has achieved to some of the people who helped him achieve it.

They include his mom, his high school fashion technology teacher, staff from On Point for College and from Say Yes to Education, nonprofit organizations that helped Lyons get into college and secure free college tuition.

Lyons, 20, who graduated in 2010, is home on a break from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Saturday he will put on a show with his own money to showcase his designs.

Three other young, former Syracuse school district students will show collections, too. — Adrianna Benton, Me’Lisa Matthews and Bilaya Jackson. Like Lyons, Benton and Jackson were students in the Syracuse school district’s fashion technology classes.

Since May 19, when Lyons got home from school, he designed and sewed 15 outfits for men and women, secured the venue for the show and recruited friends to model. He’s hoping to make enough in ticket sales to cover the $700 or so the venture is costing him.
